Listen to the Newbery Honor Book Dragonwings in this unabridged CD. Moon Shadow is eight years old when he sails from China to join his father, Windrider, in America. Windrider lives in San Francisco and makes his living doing laundry. Father and son have never met.

But Moon Shadow grows to love and respect his father and to believe in his wonderful dream. And Windrider, with Moon Shadow's help, is willing to endure the mockery of the other Chinese, the poverty, the separation from his wife and country, even the great earthquake, to make his dream come true.

Inspired by the account of a Chinese immigrant who made a flying machine in 1909, Laurence Yep's historical novel beautifully portrays the rich traditions of the Chinese community as it made its way in a hostile new world.

From School Library Journal
Grades 4-7--Laurence Yep's Newbery Honor book (HarperCollins, 1975) offers insights into the lives of Chinese-Americans in early 20th century California. The story begins as eight-year-old Moon Shadow Lee journeys across the Pacific to join his proud and clever father at the family-owned laundry in San Francisco. The boy recounts their problems with prejudice, as well as the kindness of uncles and cousins. Father and son must leave the protection of the family to move out of Chinatown, but they find refuge with a generous and friendly landlady. Once they have successfully established a repair business, they turn their attention to making a flying machine. Though it's a modern invention, part of their motivation is the elder's belief in his own previous dragon existence. Yep draws heavily on his own heritage, but also includes figures such as Teddy Roosevelt and the Wright Brothers, and historic events such as the San Francisco Earthquake. The result is a heartwarming story set in a familiar time and place, but told from a new perspective. The quiet intensity of B. D. Wong's narration enriches the text as he creates memorable voices for a large cast of characters. Wafting, ethereal music signals the end of each side of the cassette, and the cover art is attractive. The only problem is the lightweight cardboard package, which is not sturdy enough for heavy circulation. That shouldn't deter libraries from purchasing this fine recording which will provide upper elementary and middle school listeners with lessons in history, and a gentle reminder of the value of a loving family and loyal friends.

I want to get away, I want to fly away
By E. R. Bird
No one melds fact and myth into seamless storylines of historical fiction quite like Lawrence Yep. Like many of his tales, the remarkable, "Dragonwings", reflects on the Chinese experience in America. Says Yep in his author's note, "I have tried to make some of these dry historical facts become living experiences". The result is a book that certain kids will grow attached to and respect. Admittedly, it is not a book for all children, but for what it offers it is an impressive work.

The plot follows Moon Shadow, a boy sent from his native China to live with his father in the Land of the Gold Mountains a.k.a San Francisco in 1903. While there, Moon Shadow learns a great deal about the ways the white settlers (referred to in this text, without exception, as demons) reacted to the Chinese in California. Yep does not play down the characters' difficulties, but Moon Shadow and his father, Windrider, learn the ways in which they may live their lives acceptably. They befriend their white employers, survive the great San Francisco earthquake, and finally Windrider follows his dream of making a flying machine just as the Wright Brothers did. This portion of the book is based on the true story of a Chinese immigrant that on September 22, 1909 flew from the hills of Oakland, California. As Yep points out in his author's note, this book is a historical fantasy and not an actual factual construction. Nonetheless, Windrider's quest is such that you feel just as caught up in the excitement of the moment as he is when at last he is able to test his creation.

What is so impressive about Lawrence Yep's writing is how he accepts that there are no hard and fast rules about the ways in which people act and react. The Chinese are constantly set upon by the white majority, yet there are good Tang people and bad Tang people just as there are good whites and bad whites. The sentence that really drilled this home for me was one referring to a white female friend Moon Shadow and his father made the acquaintance of. Miss Whitlaw befriends our heroes, as well as the patriarch of their company, referred to mostly as "Uncle". The section I love reads, "I won't say that Miss Whitlaw and Uncle became the best of friends, but they came to like each other as much as two such difference people could". To me, this is an eloquent description of how two people from remarkably different backgrounds can become close without ever reaching the closeness that comes from being with someone like yourself.

So here's the real test of this book; Do kids actually like reading it? Published originally in 1975, I remember hearing about this story when I was in elementary school. And, admittedly, I never so much as picked it up. For those kids that do glance through it, or are assigned it in school, what is their reaction? Honestly, I thought the book began rather slowly. Yep is introducing his subject honestly and with tact and feeling, all of which make the beginning a small slog for the average child reader. Those kids that stick with it, however, will find fights, natural disasters, and attempted throat slittings galore. To my mind, Yep's "Child of the Owl" is a lot more kid friendly than the well-written but ultimately measured "Dragonwings". So if I were to give a child I knew a good, if more contemporary, book reflecting the experiences of Chinese-Americans, I'd probably offer them the former. None of this is to say that there aren't children out there that consider "Dragonwings" to be their favorite book ever. I just suspect they are a minority.

In the end, "Dragonwings" has won more awards and garnered more praise than I think Lawrence Yep could have ever hoped for. It is a fine noble creation and well deserves the attention it has received. Whether kids will ever willingly open its pages is open to debate, but it is definitely a fascinating look into the lives of a people that could well have remained unknown but for the superb prose and experienced writing of one of the finest American writers of our day and age.

This is a good book. I like it very much.

Laurence Yep's novel DRAGONWINGS was the book that our teacher assigned to read for ESL studend. Like most of my classmates, at first I did not like this book. I thought both its story and language were so strange. But later on, I felt that the story more and more interesting, the language better and better. This novel is unusual historical novel. It describes the Chinese immigrants' life at the early of this century in San Francisco. It introduces a lot of Chinese culture and tradition to its readers which remind me what experience in my motherland China. On the other hand, it also introduces a lot of American culture from a Chinese child. It is a great reading book for ESL. Especially for Chinese students. All in all, it is worthy to read, even again. I'll suggest my son who is in third grade to read this book.

Dragonwings
By Greg Deal
This was an excellent book written through the eyes of a Chinese boy who comes to America and lives among white people, adjusting to their ways and making new friends. Laurence Yep does a wonderful job of portraying the world through the eyes of and immigrant in a new place. He shows the hardships as well as the good times. After reading this book I looked at life a little bit differently. Moonshadow and his dad shared the same dream of flying. And Windrider his father is being tested in this life to become a dragon in the next and by flying he might be able to accomplish this. Windrider shares wonderful dreams woth Moonshadow about being a dragon. The story is filled with love, trust and dishonesty. This is a book I would reccommend to anyone. This book helped me in my personal life as well. Now i know what it's like to be in a new place, and I will help people in a similar situation out and not make fun of them becausce I know I wouldn't want to be treated that way myself.

A valuable resource for the geocacher.
By James Thayer
As an experienced puzzle cacher (1100+ puzzle finds and counting), I recommend this book highly. I am often asked how to solve puzzle caches and every bit of the advice that I have given (and more) is in this book.

It's aimed primarily at those who want to learn how to solve the puzzles used in geocaches. I think it succeeds very well in this regard. There is a tremendous amount of good advice on how to solve puzzles. The walk-throughs, in particular, are good at showing how to approach a new and apparently impenetrable puzzle.

Experienced puzzlers won't need the advice part as much, but there is still plenty of useful information here that will help solving puzzles. And it can also be useful for inspiring ideas for creating your own puzzles.

It's both a good book on puzzle-caching, AND a well written cross-section of an astonishing number of topics.
By Mike
I bought a copy of this book at Geo-Woodstock this year, met the author, and there expressed my most-sincere praise for this book, which I had never seen before.

You see, there are really TWO ways to look at this book. One way is to use it exactly as the author intended: to understand puzzle caches, to get ideas of how to solve the one that's presently vexing you, and to maybe come up with a new puzzle of your own. (Yeah, you always knew that puzzlers were diabolical ... you just didn't realize HOW diabolical!)

But there's also another way to regard this, and it's really a testament to Cully's skill (and perseverance!) as a writer. In the 17 chapters and 9 appendices of this book, you'll find an astonishing cross-section of topics being discussed. Cryptologic history; steganography; music theory; electronic resistors; multi-segment displays; higher math; digital photography; the list just keeps going. Despite the astonishing number of topics covered, Cully covers each one very well. You can just sit back and learn A LOT of things that you never knew, by reading it from one cover to the other ... as, in fact, I did. He stays "on point" to the purpose and theme of the book, generally covering neither too-little nor too-much. And you say: "Gee, how interesting. I didn't know that ..."

In other words: this is the hard-work of a genuinely gifted technical writer, and no doubt, a technical editor. Several years of earnest work went into this volume, and it shows. (At Woodstock, every copy he brought sold-out within hours, as I knew it would.)

I am so thankful for this book!!!!
By Long Hunter
I normally hate puzzle cache, you know the ones. They start out with some weird symbols or really don't give you much of an idea on how to even start solving it. I usually just resign myself to have that pesky Question Mark icon forever on my geocaching map. Now, with this book I at least have a fighting chance. The book explains several different types of puzzles and the best approach to solving them. Not only does it give you great advice on how to solve these, it the author walks you through an example and leads to the solution, but that's not all, after the walk through puzzle he gives you one to work out on your own. If you have trouble solving puzzle caches, this book is for you.

The Perfect Pass: American Genius and the Reinvention of Football, by S. C. Gwynne

A Kirkus Reviews Best Nonfiction Book of the Year

In the tradition of Michael Lewis’s Moneyball, award-winning historian S.C. Gwynne tells the incredible story of how two unknown coaches revolutionized American football at every level, from high school to the NFL.

Hal Mumme is one of a handful of authentic offensive geniuses in the history of American football. The Perfect Pass is the story of how he irreverently destroyed and re-created the game.

Mumme spent fourteen mostly losing seasons coaching football before inventing a potent passing offense that would soon shock players, delight fans, and terrify opposing coaches. The revolution he fomented began at a tiny, overlooked college called Iowa Wesleyan, where Mumme was head coach and Mike Leach, a lawyer who had never played college football, was hired as his offensive line coach. In the cornfields of Iowa, while scribbling plays on paper napkins, these two mad inventors, drawn together by a shared disregard for conventionalism and a love for Jimmy Buffett, began to engineer the purest, most extreme passing game in the 145-year history of football. Implementing their “Air Raid” offense, their teams—at Iowa Wesleyan and later at Valdosta State and the University of Kentucky—played blazingly fast—faster than any team ever had before, and they routinely beat teams with far more talented athletes. And Mumme and Leach did it all without even a playbook. Their quarterback once completed sixty-one of eighty-six passes, both collegiate records.

In The Perfect Pass, S.C. Gwynne explores Mumme’s leading role in changing football from a run-dominated sport to a pass-dominated one, the game that tens of millions of Americans now watch every fall weekend. Whether you’re a casual or ravenous football fan, this is a truly compelling story of American ingenuity and how a set of revolutionary ideas made their way from the margins into the hot center of the game we celebrate today.

Review
"The most entertaining book on football this decade."
—Allen Barra, The Dallas Morning News

“Excellent sports history . . . an inspiring reminder that great ideas don't automatically permeate the existing ideology. Sometimes a devoted few must pursue their principles with diligence, even if they don't get the glory.”
—Publishers Weekly

“It is undeniable that the Air Raid, the fast passing game, and the frequency of the forward pass are now imprinted on football, especially, as Gwynne notes, on the college level though also in the NFL. That makes his subtitle all the more fitting, for undeniably, the two coaches changed the game—and brought glory to their institutions. A superb treat for all gridiron fans.”
—Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

"A rousing tale of innovation finding success in the face of the gale-force winds of convention."
—Booklist

"The Perfect Pass is a perfect book about football—and the transformative power of innovation. S.C. Gwynne brings the same remarkable reporting and storytelling skills he used in Empire of the Summer Moon and Rebel Yell to reveal the dramatic history behind the passing revolution that disrupted and forever changed America’s favorite sport. His portrait of Hal Mumme, the unknown underdog coach who unleashed the Air Raid offense on the modern game, is superb, at once capturing the passion and genius that made him an unsung hero of his generation."
—Brian D. Sweany, editor in chief, Texas Monthly

"When we played against a Hal Mumme offense, our defense had to be changed dramatically. You had to throw away everything you knew or you were going to get beat. Every offensive coordinator and defensive coordinator in football better study this book to find out why."
—Jerry Glanville, former NFL and college head coach

“Being a football coach who innovates against the way the game has long been played is deeply challenging. S.C. Gwynne captures perfectly how Hal Mumme's Air Raid offense helped change the landscape of college football forever. It's a great story.”
—Bruce Arians, head coach, Arizona Cardinals

"Hal Mumme has always been a true American genius, and every year teams running his offense are among the tops in yards and points. I know, because I would've liked to have hired him. He has a brilliant football mind, and here at last is his amazing story, told in full."
—Bob Stoops, head coach, University of Oklahoma

"If you are a coach, a manager, an entrepreneur, an executive, an MBA student, etc. looking for a real life example of thinking way outside the box and changing your industry or field completely, then The Perfect Pass is the book for you.  Read it, digest it, and then apply it to your life’s work."
—Texas History Page

"The tale of Hal Mumme and how he changed American football is a David and Goliath story with similarities to Michael Lewis's Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game, about the Oakland Athletics baseball team and its number-crunching general manager, Billy Beane. That was a different sport and era, but both Beane and Mumme found themselves in underdog positions and used creative, out-of-the-box thinking to level the playing field."
—Houston Press

"Along with his protégé Mike Leach, now the head coach at Washington State University, Mr. Mumme revolutionized their sport in ways that, frankly, dwarf the legacy of Billy Beane and his gang from 'Moneyball.'"
—The Wall Street Journal

"Informative and entertaining and a must read for anyone interested in the inner game of football strategy....If you are a football coach, football fan or simply a guy who likes a good story, S.C. Gwynne scored a touchdown."
—Tony DeMeo, American Football Monthly

“Gwynne masterfully reports how this eccentric offensive genius, who became college football’s youngest offensive coordinator as a 29-year-old at UTEP and who espouses heretical notions such as no weightlifting and very short practices without hitting or wind sprints, followed his own path and put passing at the forefront to runaway success. His stamp is everywhere, even in the NFL.”
—Austin American-Statesman

Portrait of the Artist as a Young Coach
By Flint Michaelson
It may as well have been called "portrait of the artist as a young coach," because that's what Hal Mumme is: an artist whose medium is football. His likes to win, but more than winning, he is a man who once had a vision of football transforming football from a brutal scrum and into a passionate display of arial perfection and commitment and, after years of toil and study, he achieved his vision. Along the way he and his teams bucked orthodoxies at every turn, sometimes apparently just for the sake of being different, and also broke nearly every passing record possible, and revolutionized the game even while he was exiled from the big time himself.

More than just the story of Mumme, though, Gwynne delves deep into the history of the forward pass in football, from its legalization (and disdain) in the early 20th century and its evolution through famous figures like Bill Walsh, LaVell Edwards, and Mouse Davis to more obscure names like Jack Neumeier, Red Faught, and Dutch Meyer. He traces the evolution and slow uptick in passing throughout the decades, even as the pioneers who aired it faced constant skepticism from purists who thought their approach wasn't merely unsound strategy, but also faintly immoral.

We see the young Mumme giving up a lucrative sales job as a young man to embark on his personal odyssey in coaching, paying his dues through a string of hard-won but precarious jobs that paid next to nothing, as he met and studied the works of those masters who'd came before. All of it to pursue a vision that began as both a passion and a vague notion: to throw the football and throw it more often and better than anyone had ever done before. This book tells the story of Mumme toiling in obscurity, constantly studying and criss-crossing the country to learn and refine his system, putting in the time in the woodshed like all great artists do.

This is a good read for anyone interested in studying the history of the passing game. Gwynne's style is crisp and a fun read, but don't expect a lot of memorable turns of phrase here. Some of the history that Gwynne cites in regards to Mumme also seems to be fudged a bit, and with little knowledge of his subject before he began writing this book, Gwynne seems to heap a bit too much praise and credit onto Mumme, delving into constant hyperbole while glossing over the man's faults and failings (which would make him a more interesting subject of a biography) and ending, oddly, on Mumme's high point as a coach: his first Kentucky team's 1997 upset of Alabama (which was in the middle of one of its worst seasons in years, it turns out, but Gwynne doesn't tell you that, either) that came in the midst of a 5-7 season.

That's odd because the next 19 years of Mumme's career, which was a spectacular fall from grade that is probably a compelling book in its own right, gets glossed over in a brief epilogue at the end, such as when he says that Kentucky team in 2001 had lost a lot of talent the year before (justifying the 2-9 record), but he fails to mention that Mumme brought much of that on himself by running off players and, inexplicably, benching his returning All SEC QB Dustin Bonner in favor of 300lb freshman interception machine Jared Lorenzen. Hal Mumme is a brilliant, fascinating, transformative figure in football history whose career has been tragically defined by his own hubris and apparent inability to get out of his own way, but Gwynne doesn't even touch upon that angle here, leaving this book a shell of what it could have been.

Gwynne also fails to delve into the reasons why the Air Raid offense, which has traditionally had a pretty mediocre record in terms of winning percentage, continued to spread and grow ever more popular even as Mumme's star fell further and further. The lack of any mention of Tony Franklin, an assistant coach who was a big part of Mumme's downfall at Kentucky and later popularized the offense by packaging and selling it to high school and college coaches eager to learn "the system" also seems like a glaring omission.

Still, if you want to learn how the passing game evolved into the wide open offenses we see everywhere today or come to a better understanding of how art and football intersect, you will definitely want to read this book.

Well done, Thanks.
By Russell Roberts
Great book. Although i do not agree with all of Gwynne's observations on why the passing game has had such a difficult time in becoming the dominating offensive concept in football, his facts are great. He explains quickly and simply the transformation of offensive thought. He includes some folks that usually get left out like "Dutch Meyer." Hal Mumme was and is a difference maker. His story so remarkable and the sacrifices he made to develop it were so significant, that they need to be told. Gwynne has done it. As a veteran Texas High School coach and a friend of Hal Mumme and several of the characters in the book I say "well done and thanks."

Great football read
By K. Furr
I give out very few 5 stars to books, but that's what I'm giving here. This was simply a great read. If you're old enough to have followed football for a few decades, you know the passing game has somehow grown from an afterthought to the dominant mode of play, making football more exciting than ever (and if you don't believe me about the exciting part, just watch some 1960s college game on ESPN Classic and prepare for a nice snooze). I recall in the 1990s arguing that the passing game was really taking off and a friend actually argued against me. Well I was right but I wish I had known then all the details I know now, having read this book. It tells a lot of the story about how that happened and the personalities driving the change. And it might just make you want to run to the nearest Division III stadium to see what's up at the scrappiest level of play.

Star Runners, by L E Thomas

I wish I could tell you how cool this is.

With those words uttered by his best friend during an online chat, Austin Stone, a high school senior, forces himself to accept the fact his friends are leaving him behind.

With average grades, less than stellar play in baseball, and a single mother struggling to make ends meet, it looks as if Austin's only way to continue his education would be through some kind of miracle.

His only escape is playing an online space simulation, Star Runners. It seems to be the only environment in which he excels. However, being a champion Trident Starfighter isn't something you want to brag about in public nor will it help earn a scholarship.

But as soon as Austin is about to give up on college he reaches the top of the elite server. He receives an invitation from a school shrouded in secrecy promising to unlock his hidden potential. With no other options, Austin takes the offer.

What Austin doesn't realize is that his dream of going to college has just opened up the cosmos and will challenge everything Austin thinks he knows about himself and the universe.

The Training Runners with Potential
By J. Perez
I hope you find this review USEFUL.

What I would have liked to know before I bought this book. (minor spoilers)

1. What type of book is it: adventure, action, drama, etc? This is a high school drama set in a sci-fi space combat military academy. Emphasis on high school. (They are supposed to be in college but sure don't act like it.)

2. What is the story about, in general? The story is about Austin. He is scouted into the Legion Navy by the use of a space combat simulator masqueraded as a game. He is never told that he was going into the military, until it is too late. The book focuses on the recruitment process, the subsequent indoctrination and all the high school type angst drama you can think off. Don't expect a lot of action. For those who've seen the "Last Star Fighter", it's the same general premise with a lot less excitement.

3. What/Who is the target audience? Teenagers and young adults. The mentality of the characters and the story focus does not evolve enough to target the older adult audience.

4. How is the proofreading? The proofreading is well above average, but there are some obvious mistakes here and there.

5. Is there character development or exploration? Yes, there is a lot of character development and exploration. I find the main protagonist to have solid merits and flaws. I also enjoy the change of his development from closet loser to ambitious high school senior. After that point, Austin becomes an intergalactic high school senior ... in a military college? I know, very odd thing to say, but I mean it. He doesn't grow up, even after being a spectator to horrible things. I do not feel a lot of empathy with the secondary characters, but it is not because they aren't fleshed out. I simply don't feel that I get to know them very well.

6. Are the characters likable? There are many angles to think about on this. The protagonist, while alone, thinks and develops as an individual. When in a group, the protagonist usually devolves into high school clique mentality. This makes for uncompelling character synergy as the characters don't grow on the reader because, though rounded as individuals with backgrounds, they are socially inept.

Secondary characters feel restrained and trapped in rote roles. The story almost becomes formulaic. They DO have secondary character characteristics: background and particular looks that set them apart.

7. Do you have to suspend disbelief? The very PREMISE of this book forces a significant amount of disbelief. First, the line of `a younger mind has an easier time accepting the truth' is outright undermined by TWO scenes. If the revelation had been intentional, I would applaud it and laud praise at the grand deception being played on the characters, but it seemed to be a writing goof (I might be wrong about the goof. That would be AWESOME as it would add levels of intrigue, betrayal and conspiracy). If you want to train space combat fighters, simply recruit older fighter pilots. Use the Legion's super advance medical tech to correct imperfections brought about by age (bad vision, sagging reflexes, etc) and retrain them.

8. Does the story keep its pacing? Yes and no. There is great wonder and discovery within the first 50 percent of this book, and then it stalls. The next 40 percent (I'm using kindle format percentages) is full of high school type drama, predictable angst and `emo' conflict, and the ever silly high school bullying scenes. You'd think they would stop by now, but no. Characters act like fourteen or fifteen years old. The story setting is supposed to be in the military, but it doesn't feel like it. It feels more like being coached as part of a sports team. Heck, it feels like being at camp.

The protagonist is rarely, and I mean this, involved in the action. He's a spectator even when in a star fighter, even when laser beams and missiles fly around him. You will have to wait until the 90 percent mark to see Austin take on enemy fighters with his own skill. That WILL be too little too late for some readers. It was for me.

There are many scenes where the main protagonist REPEATEDLY realizes "this is for real". How many times does he have to realize the same thing? Last, because of the rote roles involved, key scenes became singularly predictable. I wanted to be surprised, but wasn't. In fact, scenes, before the 90 percent mark, were so predictable that even the severity of the outcomes were predictable. Son of a gun!

The reader is provided with the most cursory descriptions of the Star/Galactic Legion. That lack is either a deliberate plot device for some good intrigue and conflict or an accidental omission. I think we'll have to wait for book 2 to determine which.

9. Is the book worth the asking price? The book is $5 and touches on the upper range of the standard ebook price. I honestly feel this is a $4 read.

In conclusion: This is a high school coming of age drama in a sci-fi military space setting. After compelling exposition, the rising action stalls into predictable scenes and `emo' dubiousness. It becomes somewhat dull and I found myself browsing through `action' scenes because of their predictability. The main explanation for the world logic (IE. the reason a game for kids is used to secretly recruit kids as star pilots) is compromised in two different scenes. The military culture is undeveloped and didn't feel professional. The climax is solid, but too little too late. The decreasing action and resolution has a strong message and impact. 'Kudos' on that. The proofreading is above average, but there are some noticeable errors. The price is `ok' and within the standard ebook price, but I feel the stalled pacing merits a $4 price range. Even with the slow pace, this book is a story setting volume that clearly indicates a series or saga. Though I found the book unexciting it DOES have its rare gems. Now that we have hopefully gotten through the tedious training camp, I can see great potential for a thrilling series.

YA Space Saga for Middle Schoolers
By ConciseAlan
This book is clearly targeted towards middle schoolers. It's a "do what you're told, follow the rules and things will work out" story for most of the way.

I would recommend this except for the frequent misuse of "your" and other similar things, which I ignore in books targeted to adults. There's not a single profane word in the book. It came close, though, when the hero "almost swore."

At times, the writing is painfully choppy, but most of the book flows smoothly. The book is completely tactical, and there's no insight into what makes the good guys good. The bad guys are cardboard, but the action is fun.

A very pleasent surprise!
By Amazon Customer
This is another one of those books that I bought on a whim since it popped up in my recommendations. I honestly do not remember if it was on one of my Goodreads friends lists or if I saw it in my Kindle recommendations but in any case, this book was a very pleasant surprise. The previous book that I bought on a whim like this was Cadet and that one was not bad but not really anything to write home about either.

This book is another one of those young person discovers that there are aliens, spaceships and all kinds of great and not so great things out there. I do like those stories so I may be a bit biased from the start. However, this book was certainly one of the better such books that I have read. The author himself classifies this as a young adult story but personally I have to say that it could very well have done with a not so young audience classification.

The story, the writing and the characters are quite well done. One thing I really like about this book is that it does not rush it. It takes its time to develop the story. Many books with this kind of story just rushes over the surprise moments and the learning curve in a few chapters and then all of a sudden our hero is a full fledged starship pilot or something. This book is really spending time building up the story and spends quite a lot of time on the characters and character development. For a good third, or even a bit more, of the book the main character still thinks he is going to a school on Earth for example. The truth is only very slowly revealed. For the reader it is fairly obvious where it is heading of course but then you can deduce that by the title after all.

Even when the truth is revealed the book continues to properly develop the context and the characters. The education continues and you do not become a star fighter pilot overnight in this book. Actually it is not until the very end that Austin earns his wings and the road to that is a bumpy one. This is another good thing with this book. It is not all fun and games. Friends are lost along the way and Austin is not always sure whether he wants to go on or not. In some books these episodes are just forced in to create some thrilling moments which is quite annoying but in this one they come naturally as a part of both the story and the character development.

One thing that felt a bit strange though was that the entire universe seemed to be made up by humans or at least humanoids identical to the ones developed on Earth. The word “alien” is mentioned once in the book and then it is discarded as a stupid question. That did irk me somewhat but it is really a minor thing. The hard code science fiction readers out there might also regret that there is very little science and certainly not much in the form of technical explanations in this book. This book focuses almost entirely on the story and the characters. That is not to say that they wonder about and talk all the time. The book is far from devoid of action, both during the training and the real stuff.

A very pleasant surprise and excellent reading indeed. This book is one where I definitely will pick up the next one if a second book is published.
