About the Author
Joan Berzoff, EdD, is the director of the End of Life Program at the Smith College School for Social Work, where she served as chair of Human Behavior and co-chair of the doctoral program for over twenty-five years. She has authored four textbooks, over thirty-five articles, and lectures widely in the U.S. and internationally. She maintains a private practice in Northampton, Massachusetts.

Laura Melano Flanagan, MSW, teaches at the Smith College School for Social Work and has taught at the Hunter College and New York University Schools of Social Work. She maintains a private practice of psychotherapy and supervision in New York City and is a psychological consultant to various programs for young opera singers.

Patricia Hertz, MSW, is in private practice in the Boston area, where she works with adolescents, adults, couples, and families. She is a clinical consultant at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Dana Farber Cancer Institute, and the Big Apple Circus Clown Care Unit, and she teaches at the Smith College School for Social Work.

Good for it's purpose

Had to buy this book for a clinical social work practice class and was satisfied with the psychodynamic explanations as well as the explanations of Freudian theories and tenants still used in various forms of mental health treatments and theories today. Very recently published book so it's pretty accurate to where clinical theory is at the moment.

A Good Primer for Reflection on Technology and Christian Faith

I have been thinking and writing about church and media now for a handful of years. The topic, and the reality, is fascinating. The Internet is a present reality and an overwhelming force in our world, and for those of us who depend and rely on its powers to enhance our productivity and increase our social reach, the challenges it presents for maintaining a grip on our essential humanity while being digitized and virtualized are immense. Christians should be thinking about technology, its effects, and the opportunities we now have as followers of Jesus in light of this new and evolving facet of so many of our lives.

Adam Thomas' Digital Disciple is just such a work. Thomas, an Episcopal priest, is a member of the Millennial generation and a product of the digital age. In the telling of his life narrative, Thomas sounds a number of notes concerning embodiment and disembodiment, physicality and virtuality, and connection and isolation that are pressing and relevant concerns for all of us.

Within each chapter of his book, Thomas turns his attention toward a specific technological challenge for Christian discipleship. He examines virtual and physical connection (and the value in both), the difference between loose ties and deep communion, the buffers technology surrounds us with and the need for intimacy, the embodied nature of human existence, and the hurried world we live in that can be a barrier to prayer. For each of these concerns, Thomas turns his attention to Scripture, helping his reader to see where ancient words provide a contemporary challenge to modern maladies. He seeks to answer the challenges and opportunities present within the use of technology with theological truth, providing a God-centered account of both sin and redemption in our use of modern tools.

Overall, my impression of this work is very positive. It is a short book, and an easy read. It is filled with personal illustrations that concretize technological concerns, rather than relegate them to abstraction. Thomas has a self-depreciating style, and commonly exposes his nerdiness in the footnotes. He is authentic, transparent, and honest concerning his own struggles. He teaches from his own life.

Turning it off? Is that the best we can do?

Review source: ARC provided by publisher through Netgalley (note: misplaced footnotes made the book very difficult to read in the kindle ARC I was given. It's to be hoped that this was cleaned up before publication.

Major ideas: Adam Thomas writes from the perspective of a digital native wondering what effect the internet (and related technologies) will have on his relationship with God. Mostly, Thomas sees a pretty bleak picture of separation, disembodiment, lack of mindfulness, and even addiction as he reflects on Tech (as he terms it) and the changes it has made in society. The solutions he offers, then, are for the most part suggestions about how to live without the internet.

Writing style: As I was reading, I was trying to figure out the audience for this book. Thomas includes definitions of really basic tech terms throughout (i.e. "google," "facebook"); these make you think that the book might be geared for someone who knows nothing at all about the internet. But really, who is left in our society who doesn't know what Google and Facebook are? There are a lot of books being written right now that deal with these ideas from a secular viewpoint (Lessig, Shirky, etc.); Thomas did not seem to have engaged with these authors much if at all. His few references were to the standard Christian authors like C.S. Lewis.

Take-aways: Because of my confusion about his audience (or perhaps because I was not his audience), I sometimes found myself frustrated that Thomas did not really grapple with some of the issues that he raises. In other words, I found the questions raised in the book to be pertinent and thought-provoking; the suggested solutions much less so. My take-aways from the book will be the questions: What might it mean to "do church" online? How will the internet change society, the church, and the individual believer? Does the disembodied self of the avatar deny the incarnation?

Wrap-up: I would recommend this book for the layperson who wonders about the difference between Millennial and non-Millennial believers, or about the ramifications of technology upon faith. I would not recommend the book for anyone doing scholarly work. 3/5*

If "Family Guy" did theology. . .

I read Fr. Thomas' book because a mentor of mine gave it to me after using it in a small group study at his parish. He was interested in what a member of Fr. Thomas' own generation thought of his ideas, mostly because he said that the most common reaction from his congregation was, "I don't understand what's bad about Facebook! My kids and grandkids don't call me, so I use Facebook to see what they are doing!"

Fr. Thomas examines the life of the Christian in the digital age. This short book is easy to read if you are part of his target demographic, but I can imagine it would be difficult if you aren't. A Kansas City to Cleveland plane ride did it for me.

The writing style is very reminiscent of an episode of the TV show "Family Guy." Fr. Thomas makes frequent parenthetical asides, most often to interject humor. Even as a fellow member of the Millennial generation, the generation who's ability to "multi-task" defines the term ADD, it took me several paragraphs to get used to his voice. Fr. Thomas also has a huge vocabulary, flowing easily from pop-culture references to 50-cent words that would make an English teacher proud.

As a self-described blogger, Fr. Thomas' content in incredibly self-referential. The number of times he uses the first-person pronoun verges on the unnecessary. This is clearly not a book for scholarly interest, it is best used for self-reflection and small group study. For small group study, Fr. Thomas does provide questions for discussion. Such small group study would best be contained to groups of 20-somethings or younger, Fr. Thomas' contemporaries, to whom the book seems to be directed.

After getting an insight into this couple’s marriage, which joined two planets, in Taming His Queen, we are given more into the life of Lyra and Astor. This book goes into detail on how the two met, the arrangement of their marriage, and their married life. I do should make everything easy, right? Not with these two!
Throughout this read, there are ups and downs in the marriage of the two. These ups and downs aren’t necessarily their own doing, but of course outside forces that have a major impact on the union. A revolution is plotted against Astor’s planet and people, but will sweet Lyra be able to stop if from coming to fruition? Read this book to see all that Lyra went through, with lots of hot lovin’ showing how amazingly compatible the two truly are, and the Domestic Discipline that could eventually help Lyra let go all that is bad in her life if she only allows it. Great read! Can’t wait to read more from this author!

There's so much to love about Casey McKay's first sci-fi spanking romance

There's so much to love about Casey McKay's first sci-fi spanking romance. First of all, the arranged marriage to a strict (but loving) man from another planet where women are corrected with good old-fashioned physical discipline, is delicious! You get to watch the culture class of Lyra, an independent female from Earth, grapple with having a powerful, dominant husband who won't accept all her little rebellious without delivering a firm, bare-bottomed spanking.

The plot flies along, with intrigue from rebel warriors and a time machine that Lyra has been forbidden by her new husband to use. I loved Astor, her empathic husband, who is able to modulate her discipline perfectly because he can read her every mood. Oh, and he's a doctor, so there's a very hot punishment examination (and whipping) scene-- YUM!

Fun characters and lots of heat!

Casey gets you right into the action and keeps the pace fast in this enjoyable read! If you enjoy stories that include domestic discipline style spankings (not too severe) that often tie into sex between the hero and heroine, this is the perfect read! Casey has a fun, light-hearted writing style and includes humor and lively dialogue. I've never been especially into sci-fi romances, but Casey made me rethink the genre! I especially enjoy the mental/mind-reading connection between Lyra and Astor, and how they work through their misunderstanding and mistrust to achieve a deep, satisfying love.

About the Author
Mark F. Sanders has been a faculty member in the Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology at the University of California, Davis for 27 years. In that time, he has taught more than 120 genetics courses to more than 30,000 undergraduate students. Specializing in teaching the genetics course for which this book is written, Dr. Sanders also teaches a genetics laboratory course, an advanced human genetics course for biology majors, and a human heredity course for non-science majors.� His teaching experience also includes introductory biology, and courses in population genetics and evolution.�

Dr. Sanders received his Bachelors degree in Anthropology from San Francisco State University and his Master’s and Ph.D. degrees in Biological Anthropology from the University of California, Los Angeles.� Following graduation, he spent four years at the University of California, Berkeley as a post-doctoral researcher studying inherited susceptibility to human breast and ovarian cancer. At UC Berkeley he also taught his first genetics courses. Since coming to the University of California, Davis, Dr. Sanders has maintained a full-time teaching schedule and promotes academic achievement by undergraduate students in numerous ways, including as an active student advisor, through his on-going role as the director of a long-standing undergraduate student program, and by past service as the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Academic Programs in the College of Biological Sciences.

He received a B.S. in Biochemistry at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Illinois in 1986 and a Ph.D. in Biology from the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, California.� His Ph.D. research focused on how the identities floral organs are specified in Arabidopsis (described in Chapter 20).� He conducted postdoctoral research at Monash University on the regulation of floral development.� From 1996-2006 his laboratory at UC Davis focused on the developmental genetics of plant development, focusing on how leaves are patterned. From 2006-2011 he was a Federation Fellow at Monash University where his laboratory is studying land plant evolution using a developmental genetics approach.� At UC Davis he taught genetics, 'from Mendel to cancer', to undergraduate students, and continues to teach genetics courses at Monash University.

Welcome to your nightmare

Someone commented that this is a gem for graduate level study--maybe it is. However, for an undergraduate survey course in genetics, this book is a mess that will leave you frustrated and perplexed without feeling like you've actually learned anything. Our professor made a deal with us: most of the exams will come from the back of chapter problems. Fair enough, I thought. However, I soon began to realize that the problems AND answers were so wordy and disorganized that what should have been a boon was just confusing me even more and leaving me directionless before an exam. Part of the problem is that this text is too detailed. Another huge problem is that the solutions manual is riddled with wrong answers. After the semester was already halfway over, our professor provided us with the errata for the solutions manual and it was disorganized and incomplete as well. For a class that could have been illuminating and genuinely great, this book single-handedly made it its mission to keep the class average below 50. What a piece of garbage. Correct and edit, please.

Avoid if you can

This book is utter garbage. I can't get through a chapter without having to check the internet for corrections and mistakes that are littered throughout this book. Not to mention the lack of proof reading in the end of chapter questions. This book made Genetics hell for me, and I despise that it was a required text. Maybe the editors should fix the problems instead of making new editions of this trash.

Avoid at all costs

This is a terribly written textbook. It reads like an instruction manual, and takes two pages to get the idea or concept. My professor was repeatedly frustrated with the structure and formatting. I'm just baffled by how awful this book is!
