About the Author
WILLIAM SHURTLEFF and AKIKO AOYAGI spent their formative years on opposite sides of the Pacific, in California and Tokyo respectively. Bill and Akiko began collaborating in 1972, doing research and writing books about soyfoods. They worked together for six years in East Asia, mainly in Japan, studying with top soyfoods researchers, manufacturers, nutritionists, historians, and cooks. William is currently the director of the Soyfoods Center, which he and Akiko founded in 1976, and lives in Lafayette, California. A freelance illustrator and graphic designer, Akiko lives and owns her own art business in Walnut Creek, California.

Very clear explanation

I came from Indonesia, "tempeh country". For me tempeh is my food, I ate since maybe I could eat solid food. Very common, people never thought how to make tempeh. You always can buy anytime and cheap. When I moved to America, I didn't find tempeh like I always ate and fresh..with the smell so nostalgic. My husband found in library THE BOOK OF TEMPEH (same author)and I learned how to make tempeh from that book. I did...then now, I confident enough to say, my tempeh is really good. Because all my friends in here says...my tempeh different and taste better. Thanks Bill !!!!!
So, we have plan...in our retire live in Mainland (maybe countryside PA) we will make tempeh company. I bought this book and my husband said, very clear the explanation about machine, room, etc.

About the Author
Raymond Carver was born in Clatskanie, Oregon, in 1938. His father was a saw-mill worker and his mother was a waitress and clerk. He married early and for years writing had to come second to earning a living for his young family. Despite small-press publication, it was not until Will You Please Be Quiet Please? appeared in 1976 that his work began to reach a wider audience. This was the year in which he gave up alcohol, which had contributed to the collapse of his marriage. In 1977 he met the writer Tess Gallagher, with whom he shared the last eleven years of his life. During this prolific period he wrote three collections of stories, What We Talk About When We Talk About Love, Cathedral and Elephant. Fires, a collection of essays, poems and stories, appeared in 1985, followed by three further collections of poetry. In 1988 he completed the poetry collection A New Path to the Waterfall.

Carver for friends

Try to rate a Carver short stories collection is like trying to rate your father actions. You just can't judge him, you only can stare at him. You can even try to understand him, but you don't really have to. There is something beautiful and small hidden in every adjective, every description, every end of a story. Raymond Carver's love for human actions is everywhere in his writing. He puts big attention in little details, uncovering the small moments in every relationationship. You and your wife. Your wife and her friends. Tons of couples having dinner with other couples. Every little thing is a whole world for Carver.
This book comes with four new stories recently discovered, a couple of great essays (the great "My father's life"), early stories, introductions, books reviews and a small uncomppleted fragment of a novel. Definitively, it's Carver for friends. If you are not familiar with his books, you should start with his most famous books, as "What we talk abgout when we talk about love", or his first collection of stories, "Will you please be quiet, please?". Any other case, you are welcome to enter this house.

New stories great; disappointing book for real Carver fans

I am excited that there are "new" stories by Raymond Carver. "Call If You Need Me" and "Kindling" are among his best. The rest of the book is disappointing to me: I didn't realize that this would just be the new stories tacked on to NO HEROICS, PLEASE. Essentially, serious readers of Carver's work are being asked to buy the same book twice. "Call If You Need Me" can be found in this year's O. Henry anthology, and "Kindling" can be found in the current edition of Best American Short Stories. The other new stories, I guess, can be found in past issues of Esquire magazine. If the new stories were instead collected in some other way - say, in a slim volume alone, or with some unpublished work by other worthy writers, then I wouldn't be as disappointed. I was expecting a new book altogether -- not just new pages. Still, these stories need to be read. NO HEROICS, PLEASE is a book worth owning, too. If you don't already own it, then I recommend this title. Otherwise, find the new stories elsewhere.

Accessible book from leading scholar in the field

One of the main themes in the book is the melding of nomadic and agricultural societies. According to Wink this happened all across the middle east and China and North India during medieval times. The nomads were almost always Central Asian Turks. Their horsemanship and horse mounted archery gave them military superiority over settled agricultural societies like India. Horses were hard to breed in India, and the skills required to be a good horse mounted archer took lifelong training which came more naturally to the nomadic Turks. Is this "one factor" model of medieval history convincing? I am not qualified to judge, but sure seems like a good explanation to me. Especially since India had in the past repeatedly been invaded by nomads: Shakas, White Huns, Scythians.

The Turkish elites who conquered Northern India greatly increased trade with the middle east and a transformation to a more sophisticated monetary economy. The author points out that the large quantities of gold and silver that were looted from the temples were re-struck as coins. Contrary to popular belief, there was no large scale population impact (either via immigration or by war). The Turkish rulers had a large impact on the lives of Indians, but were always small in number. There were also no large scale conversions to Islam. There was however large scale temple destruction. The author shows clearly that Islamic iconoclasm was the main motivation. He gently chides modern day Marxist historians for trying to whitewash this issue.

The best history of sub-continental islam

Al-Hind: The Making of the Indo-Islamic World series gives the most comprehensive presentation of Islam's origins and long history in the sub-continent. Contrary to popular imagination the introduction of Islam first appeared in the south and south west of india (earliest reports suggest present day Kerala) and independently in the Island of Sri Lanka primarily by arab traders. This was a full century before skirmishes in the north west (present day pakistan and north india) between muslim troops sent to pacify pirate states to protect trade routes. Al three volumes provide the most comprehensive information about the history of half of the world muslims, one that is often ignored in todays sensationalist and monolithic view of Islam.

Transformative

This is one of the most important works of legal scholarship of the 20th century, standing on the cusp of the 21st. It transformed society's understanding of what had until that time seemed like simply a feature of life, part of "reality" about which there was nothing to be done. Mackinnon changed our lives by asserting that women had a right to redress, that sexual harassment was neither uncommon nor trivial and that women had a right to demand better. Those reviewers who dismiss it as poorly written, poorly reasoned or who attack the author personally must reckon with the fact that it was intrumental in creating a cause of action where one previously did not exist. They protest too much. This book is a must read.

Ms. MacKinnon is a bright gal, no doubt about it. But being bright doesn't preclude being misguided.
A rant dressed up as legal theory, she leaps constantly from the subjective to the general. The most imporatnt character in this book is the author and, in a hundred different ways, she lets the reader know as much over and over again.
It's lucky that women's studies departments exist because, if her works in general and this one in particular were subjected to a (dare I say it?) less hysterical discipline, MacKinnon would be publishing her theories as hand-stapled screeds and distributing them on the subway.
Read Germaine Greer -- a feminist who makes all MacKinnon's basic points but doesn't leap to quite so many stretched conclusions. Greer also likes sex (or did once) while MacKinnon seems to regard the procreative act as foreplay for the real business of complaining about it later.

I remember reading one of the editions back in Cuba in the early 90's. My father had a copy and I started reading it. I got tired of so many dirty tactics the communists were applying to their own believers. Basically I was disgusted and I stopped reading it. A must read for all the communist enthusiasts. Let's see if this time around I'm able to swallow it.
