really good overview of pensions

This is a good overview of various types of pensions. It's helpful if you and your spouse, significant other, or parents are confused about what is and is not allowed under the different pension provisions. It includes non profit pensions so it worked for me. It also helped me consider if I would rollover my pension if I changed jobs. Finally it had understandable pros and cons of Roth IRAs.

Virtually the entire pension investment and consulting industry is devoted to chasing employers to sell them products or services and speaking and writing well over the heads of the vast majority of the ordinary people who make up the millions of plan participants. It's little wonder that studies show year after year that the American workforce in increasingly mystified by the terms and procedures of their own employee benefit programs. As an ERISA attorney with more than 35 years experience, and founder of an online employee benefits counseling firm, BenefitsZoom.com, I have rarely found a book so well written for the end user of pension plans. Employers would do well to save a few dollars from the big bucks they pay their brokers and pension consultants and include a copy of this book with each summary plan description they distribute about their pension plans.

A Great Resource for Employees

As a pension lawyer, I know how difficult and arcane the pension laws can be. Yet they affect tens of millions of employees. I also know how difficult it can be for employees to get access to an understandable explanation of these pension rules. Without this knowledge, employees are at a real disadvantage in understanding and enforcing their rights. And these rights pertain to many employees' most valuable asset other than their home. This fine book covers the waterfront of all of the important pension concepts and rules in an impressively understandable and readable manner. The reader should not be daunted or intimidated by the subject of pensions when this resource is available. I highly recommend this book to anyone who cares about their retirement savings and well-being. This is one subject where it pays not to be a "dummy."

Great book if it's what you're looking for...

This is a great book on database theory. It will give you a solid understanding that is needed to design database schema for whatever system you are designing.

If you are looking for a more specific HOWTO type book so you can jump in immediately without learning the fundamentals, this isn't the book for you.

Ambiguous at best

If your only interest is to gain a cursory understanding of database development than this is the book for you. If you are relatively unexposed to the world of database management systems (DBMS), database architecture and planning then this book will provide some insights, but in my opinion it definitely stops short of really helping the novice gain practical knowledge into the complex and somewhat confusing world of database designing. It dwells mostly in the lofty theoretical aspect and does not bring it down to earth. To few examples and the section on interviewing and creating a database profile is just plain vague as though based more on theory than experience.

Learning about databases

I found this book to be useful for conceptualizing building a database. However, I found some sections about the constructing the ER diagrams and normalizing the relations to be less than clear. I would have like more examples and more diagramming of the process.

SQL for Dummies by the same author is a better tutorial for DB development.

Five stars, another one-click author for me now!

Straight-to-gay stories always get me, especially when they’re done well. And this one most definitely was. From the beginning of this well-written short story, we see how much the ostensibly straight Jake cares for his best friend, Nial. The love - even if it’s not yet acknowledged as romantic love - is already there. The few women we see in Jake’s life (pushed on him by the heavy-handed set of expectations he grew up with) are clearly not doing it for him. I LOVED the scene in Vegas where he tries to set Nial up with another man, and it finally clicks for him. HE wants Nial. I especially liked how the author handled that transition; making us see what a bond they already had, how Jake couldn’t stand to see Nial with another man when push came to shove, and how it challenged his own self-definition of straight. But at the end, when he had to make a choice, damn, did he ever come through. Beautifully written, excellent character/relationship journey handled in such a short length, and a truly, truly sweet HEA. Oh… and the sex. Smokin’ hot sexy times, too! FIVE STARS and definitely an author I’ll be one-clicking from here on!

Might have been better if it was longer

OK, sure it was a clich� theme, but there's hundreds, probably thousands of MM books with this same basic premise. What makes the difference is the writing. This story was just okay. There was too much missing information. There is no character development, so we know nothing of the 2 MCs except that they've been friends for many years and that Nial has been living with Jake since his parents put him out. How old were they exactly, being that Jake picked up Nial in his sports car and brought him to live in his apartment? Jake said that he paid for that apartment out of his own money. So were they already adults when Nial was kicked out? If so, why was Nial living at home if he wasn't in school? What exactly did Jake do? (Nial didn't even know, which is strange when you're supposed to be in love with someone, let alone your best friend.) Was songwriting the only thing Nial did all day besides sitting around the house? Jake says that his parents want him to get married, but there is never any mention of or interaction with his mother, only his father. Did she feel the same way as Jake's father? The epilogue 2 years later was kind of nice, but the one thing that was left out (that I was curious about), was what happened to Jake's father. Was he still around by the time of the epilogue? Was he telling the truth or was he simply trying to scare Jake into doing his bidding? There were just too many questions still unanswered, IMO.

On top of all that, it didn't really feel as though Jake loved Nial the same way Nial loved him. It seemed like with the thought of marrying someone he barely knew, let alone loved, then Nial talking about moving out, then someone else showing interest in Nial, all of this just combined to make Jake desperate to lose the one constant in his life. He didn't seem to have any real friends and his family didn't act like family. When they first had sex it seemed more like a last ditch effort to hold on to Nial. It seemed like that later on, too.

My heart was breaking for Nial - he loved Jake for a long time

These two best friends are roommates; Nial is a songwriter and Jake works for his father's business empire. When Jake's father decides it's time for Jake to provide him an heir, Jake takes Nial and some friends to Vegas for one last fling.

Nial's heart is breaking as he watches Jake 'audition' the women on the 'approved' list his father gave him. He could go. He should go. But he stays; sort of like not being able to turn away from a wreck when you see one. Nial watches it unfold.

Jake realizes that he can't marry any of the women on this list because he doesn't love them. He states he doesn't even like most of them. Will he be able to come to grips with what he actually feels in his heart for Nial?

Short story. Sweet friendship. HEA.

Disappointing, thin

This book is broken down into chapters, each emphasizing a particular mode of travel or somehting similar, along with an adventure or mini-adventure revolving around that mode of transport or whatever. For example, one chapter is a short adventure set aboard a zeppelin, another set aboard a train...etc etc. I guess that sounds like a decent idea to start with, and ya know, different strokes for different folks, but I personally just did not like any of the adventures in this book. They all seem to me contrived and a bit cliche, and none of them seem more in the mood of Indiana Jones than Call of Cthulhu - there's plenty of adventure but not much suspense or scariness. About the only use I have for this book is for the deck plans of the zeppelin, train, and other info on vehicles. It is probably the least useful (or should I say most useless) Call of Cthulhu sourcebook I have. But take it for what it's worth - that's just my opinion. I would strongly recommend you take a good look at this book before buying it to see if it's really what you want.

Almost worthless - to me, anyway

I have had this book for years, and have yet to use it a single time. It has about 10 or so "mini-scenarios" or interludes, a few of which are a bit longer. They are intended for insertion into an ongoing campaign. My main problem with the book is that many of them are set in way out-of-the-way places, like Siberia and India, and the 3 or 4 that aren't are short and not very good. This is definitely the worst Call of Cthulhu supplement I own. Although I should add that most of the ones I own are absolutely excellent, so perhaps my expectations for a CoC book are a bit higher than for most RPGs.

Weird passages

Fearful Passages is a book containing several scenarios to the RPG game- Call of Cthulhu. All of them are linked with a way of traveling. I think its a good scenario pack, although some of the adventures are hard to play. No, i dont mean they're difficult, i mean it is hard to think of some good reason for Investigators to travel to India, Syberia or Irak. In my opinion the best adventure in this pack is "Fear of Flying". It was the first scenario we ever played in Call of Cthulhu and from that time we play CoC regulary. All in all Fearful Passages is an amusing adventure pack and a good way to spend your money.

Excellent Resource!

I am a Behavioral Health Specialist (LCSW) working in a community based family practice medical setting in Maine. We are in the beginning stages of working to become a Patient Centered Medical Home practice and I have found this book to be a valuable resource. Considerations are presented in an order and manner that is very useful. I have shown it to many professionals that I collaborate with and used it as a helpful go-to reference. The book contains many ideas for: assessment tools; communication with medical professionals; "marketing" oneself within the practice setting; collaboration efforts and; improving efficiency & effectiveness; working with medical professionals within fast-paced medical settings; etc. This book is very helpful to me as I transition from a traditional psychotherapy setting to the Medical Home model within an outpatient medical setting.

This collection of articles leaves much to be desired

The subtitle of this collection of articles is misleading. It's not a representation of the Goldhagen debate in Germany, but a thinly disguised apologia of Goldhagen's book "Hitler's Willing Executioners". First, a number of critical reviews of Goldhagen's work that have appeared in other German newspapers than the weekly DIE ZEIT are ignored or have been deliberately omitted. For example, the historian Hannes Heer wrote a piece for the daily 'die taz' titled "The Great Tautology" that pretty much trashed Goldhagen's book. Second, and more disturbing, several well-argued and balanced appraisals of "Hitler's Willing Executioners", that appeared in scholarly journals in time for a possible inclusion in this volume, are conspicuously absent. The reviews by Juergen Matthaeus in "Zeitschrift fuer Geschichte", Reinhard Ruerup in "Neue Politische Literatur", and Dieter Pohl in "Vierteljahreshefte fuer Zeitgeschichte" give Goldhagen credit where credit is due, but they also reveal repeated inconsistencies, undocumented assertions, and a selective reading of the primary sources and secondary literature. In all, this edition is a disappointment. For an overview of the Goldhagen debate it relies too heavily on statements by non-specialists and brief articles from a narrow range of newspapers.

Impressive compilation of essays on the "Goldhagen Debate."

This book collects some thirty essays and other materials on Daniel Goldhagen's controversial 1996 book, "Hitler's Willing Executioners: Ordinary Germans and the Holocaust." Not every piece the reader might want to find is included here, but more than enough is presented to familiarize the reader with the chief objections to Goldhagen's theses raised by scholars and journalists, as well as the lines of defense offered by his supporters and Goldhagen himself. Although inherently somewhat repetitive, this book would prove rewarding to anyone interested enough in this arcane realm of Holocaust studies to be reading this review.

This was a very well organized collection of essays on Daniel Goldhagen's controversial book "Hitler's Willing Executioners". Goldhagen's main thesis is that the Jewish Holocaust was not a secret project of the Nazi elite, but was perpetrated by hundreds of thousands of ordinary Germans motivated by murderous Anti-Semitism. Though it sounds obvious that Anti-Semitism would be the prime mover in this horror, a body of scholarship holds that either 1) coercion within the totalitarian state, or 2) careerist ambitions in competing and poorly defined bureaucracies (the "structuralist" thesis) are mainly responsible. Articles are reprinted in chronological order, tracing the arc of the debate from near-universal condemnation of the thesis in Germany, to a grudging acknowledgment of its importance in light of the book's hugely enthusiastic popular reception.
Though dry and necessarily somewhat redundant, this collection offers a good introduction to various Holocaust theories, along with revealing insights into the psychic burdens and vulnerabilities of modern Germans.
