Great for breaking the ice and entertaining people

Laugh Tactics is wonderful because it calls out comedy and being funny for what it is, which is just patterns, structures, and a different way of thinking about things.

The author gives some great examples, but the best is simply, if someone asks you how the weather is, you can choose to answer literally, or you can choose to answer in a variety of other ways... because people don't really care about that answer. It's just information they can look up, but this is a chance to engage and make people laugh that we are all not paying attention to! So many times this happens in daily work and life that we don't notice it...

But that's what Laugh Tactics is a great introduction for. It shows you those small ways you can be funnier, day by day, and not in a cheesy way. I don't want to be "that guy" when trying to be funny, so this is a great guide.

Tried lots of tactics from the book already and they've all gone great!

I loved this book and here is what is great about it. It's about ways to be sly and clever in real life, not if you are on some stage and trying to tell jokes to an audience. It's about how you can be funnier in real life with real friends and real family, not to strangers. It's great! Lots of tips on how to create those small witty remarks and comebacks that the real comedians DO use, but how to do it in everyday life.

I really liked the parts about relateable things being funny and how to misconstrue things to use for your comedic advantage. Just a great way I never thought about before and it immediately can lead to better and funnier conversations!

Really great because it provides essentially a structure for essentially being humor. Just ways to break it down, and even make it formulaic.

I'm really not a funny person by nature but I have found that just by applying some of these strategies I am getting more laughs!

Being funny on command is essentially an accurate way to put the result of this book.

Word of caution that it does take some effort and practice, but of course it does right? Chapters 4, 7, 9, and 15 were my favorites.

Five Touchstones to Understanding Access

Let’s face it--learning the tricks and techniques of database design can be a bit of a slog. But if you’re just starting out with Access, here are five key insights that can help you understand how the database world works. Keep these points in mind, and you’ll be on the inside track to mastering Access.

1. Databases hold database objects. Most people are familiar with tables, the grid-like grouping of data that stores your information (for example, lists of items you own, friends you have, or products you sell through your small business). But tables are just one type of object that an Access database can hold. The other key ingredients are queries (customized search routines that pull out the information you need at the drop of a hat), reports (similar to queries, but nicely formatted and ready for printing), forms (windows that make it easy to review and edit the data in your tables), and macros and modules (miniature programs that can do just about anything—from updating 10,000 records at once to firing off an email).

3. There are two ways to work with a database: as a designer and as a user. The database designer is the person who sets up the database. The database designer has the responsibility of laying out the tables, building the queries, and knocking together some nice reports and forms (assuming you want all those features). By comparison, the database user is the person who uses the tables, queries, reports, and forms in day-to-day life. The user reviews records, makes changes, and fills the tables up with data.

Depending on what type of database you’re creating (and what you want to accomplish), you may be both the database designer and the database user. But it’s important to realize that these are distinct tasks. In fact, when using a properly designed database, database users don’t need to be particularly skilled with Access. They can just work with the forms and reports that the database designer created.

4. Sooner or later, you’ll need macros. To become an Access expert, you must first learn to design a logical, consistent set of tables and add the relationships that link them together. Next, you must learn to build the other types of objects--queries, forms, and reports--that make it easier to perform common tasks. At some point, while tackling this second stage, you’ll run into a challenge that forces you to step up to the third level of Access mastery: macros.

Macros are miniature programs that perform custom tasks. The good news is that in Access 2010, you can design your own macros without becoming a programmer. You just need to drag, drop, and arrange a sequence of ready-made macro commands into the Access macro designer. For example, you can use macros to build buttons that send emails, start printouts, make updates, or just take you around your database.

5. Expert user, meet Visual Basic. Some people stop their Access journey at this point, content to use tables, forms, reports, and macros to do all their work. But if you want to see everything Access has to offer, you need to take a look at its high-powered Visual Basic engine. Using VB code, you can do almost anything, from validating a credit card to leading a customer through an order process (two examples that are discussed in Access 2010: The Missing Manual). And if you’re willing to pick up some basic programming concepts, you can use code to transform a simple database into a cohesive database application—for example, something that looks more like the traditional desktop programs you run on your computer.

Excellent!

I had all but given up on finding a book that explains how to use Access that is neither too simplistic nor too complex. The tone is very conversational and the author easily explains and introduces complex ideas without making it feel like a textbook or leaving you overwhelmed. I have bought 3 books over the last 5 years on this subject matter and I did not pass chapter 3 in any of them. This is the best of the lot.

I hadn't created an Access database for many years (10?) so this version was quite a bit different than I was used to. The guide helped me through the learning curve, and I had a workable database in short order. The book was well worth my investment to shorten the development process.

Beginners into to Access

Maybe I have unrealistic expectations - but so much of the book is devoted to very basic items and so little of the book is devoted to software development. Almost no discussion of Access classes or calling API's; only a token consideration of programming in Access. In my opinion, this book would be excellent for someone not very familiar with Access 2010 that wants to build a database and use standard features to enter data, query it, and produce reports. This book is not quite right for the experienced software developer that wants to use an underlying programming methodology to have precise control and develop professional-looking applications that require no user training.

In the fourth edition of this book, author, Paul McFedries, has provided an excellent tool for readers to better understand and apply the advanced features of Excel including those found in the Microsoft Analysis ToolPak and Pivot Charts.

I am about half-way through the book at this time and must compliment the author on the presentation of working lessons in conjunction with downloadable databases to best understand the advanced analysis methods.

This is not a book for newbies to Excel.

About the Author
VIVIEN BEATTIE is Professor of Accounting at the University of Stirling. She has published over thirty research articles and reports, as well as contributing regularly to professional journals. Her main research interests are external audit and business reporting. She is a member of the UK Accounting Standard Board's Academic Panel. She is also a panel member for Accounting and Finance in the 2001 UK Research Assessment Exercise being undertaken in the UK.

STELLA FEARNLEY is a Reader in Accounting in the Department of Accounting and Management Science, University of Portsmouth and was formerly a senior technical manager at Grant Thornton. Her main research interests are external audit and accounting regulation, and she has published widely on these topics. She is an elected member of the Council of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales, being Deputy Chair of its Centre for Business Performance.

RICHARD BRANDT is a Research Fellow in the Department of Accounting and Management Science, University of Portsmouth. He was previously Head of Audit at Grant Thornton for nine years, and is a former member of the Urgent Issues Task Force. He is editor of the 2000-2001 edition of Auditing and Reporting, published by ABG Professional Information.

Read it all from the begining or read the last part first and then go back to the different cases to gain a faster review of the book. To those willing to gain an in-depth insight into the auditing process.

From a researcher perspective, the book addresses hot topics in the early 2000s (auditor indepedence, earnings management, and earnings quality), and should be considered as an interesting reference to consider. It also analyses those concepts with a case study methodology.

During this time he worked for a computer support company where he provided system and network support for hundreds of companies across Upstate New York and throughout Northern Pennsylvania. He also worked in a Fortune 500 corporate data center, briefly worked at an Ivy League school’s computer support department and served as an executive at an electrical engineering company. For about the last 6 years Daniel has been completely focused on security as a computer security researcher and author. His articles have been published in international security magazines, and referenced by both technical entities and the media. Daniel has assisted with numerous security training classes and technical training books mainly based on Backtrack and Kali Linux.

Best book I have found for security testing.

One of the first books to cover the new Kali 2.0 operating system. The new OS has a great interface with very easy to use menus. Much easier to use than the original Kali OS.

Covers the main security tools for the topic in depth and provides basic coverage for many of the secondary tools.

My teenage daughter gave it a once over as she is developing an interest in security and she said it was very readable and informative, even for a n00b.

Great follow up to the first book! Very helpful info for the switch from kali 1.0.9 to kali 2.0. I also love how the book is actually a book, too many other security focused books are more like brochures and can't even keep quality material for 200 pages. This book is 470 pages, and all relevant information and material.

About the Author
Peter Zarrow is a professor in the Department of History, University of Connecticut, where he focuses on the intellectual and cultural history of modern China, and an adjunct research fellow at the Institute of Modern History, Academia Sinica. His 2012 work, After Empire: The Conceptual Transformation of the Chinese State, 1885-1924, won the First Scholarly Monograph Award in the Humanities and Social Sciences, Academia Sinica.
