If you like great Achitecture and outstanding engineering..

Middleton has spoiled us with quality books, and "Manhattan Gateway" is no exception.
This book contains a well-balanced selection of how and why this beautiful structure came to life, as well as the incredible engineering that made Penn Station possible.
I am not a New Yorker or an American at all.. I live in Rome, Italy and the similarities with the baths of Diocletian and Caracalla is daunting.
Middleton focuses on technical as well as architectural details and I strongly recommend this book to whoever is interested in either subject.
Also noteworthy are the captions of how the Hell's Gate Bridge was constructed and how the "new" Pennsylvania Station will look like, returning this New York terminal to some of the architectural magnificence intended by the great architects Mc Kim, Meade and White (designers of the original station).
If you like New York, especially for what was lost menially in this great city.. you will love this book.

Fun gift! Funny but also good content

Gave this as a gift to my fiance and he found it to be funny. I read through some of it before and there is actually some great advice and thinking points in there...even the section of "are you sure you want to do this." It had humour too. I enjoyed reading from the part warning about how your bride may seem a little crazy but the woman you proposed to will return haha. I bought this used so had a crease in the cover but no big deal for the price paid. Fun gift from mother or father of the groom (or bride) or from his groomsmen or friends.

This book is like 10 years old. Honestly, not bad. BUT-Just read The Black Tux Groom's Guide and it blows this out of the water. And it was written THIS YEAR, better illos, better advice, and way funnier. Plus TBT's suits friggin' rock. Save your $12 and get TBT's Groom's Guide.

Bro Guide to Proposals and Wedding Survival, er, Planning

Ordered this is a gift for my brother after his engagement. I doubt he did a cover-to-cover read, but I skimmed a good bit of it and was pleasantly surprised by the information offered. It addresses several topics that come up pre-engagement too, so this might make a good gift for a guy who's considering popping the question, or one who has already done so. For the proposal I remember it discussing everything from the 5 C's for diamond buying (but don't be a sucker guys, go unique!) to asking her dad for permission.. or not asking. Also, moving into the wedding planning stages it addressed things like how much and in what ways the guy should expect to participate in the planning, etc. If nothing else, it's a great jumping off point for first-timers to help make sure otherwise forgotten things are considered and hopefully discussed by the couple. Good gift! Especially for the guys who you're afraid might not think of everything on their own!

His argument was that we were going through all the motions of being a church, but lacking in the individual ministries the life and experience of Christ, effectively resulting in a valley of dry bones. Before he read his text, he yelled out, ‘A preacher with a message can start a revival in a grave yard!’” Inspired, Rev. C.M. Cole returns to Northeastern Missouri where churches had backslid into a graveyard state. This book covers the beginning of the backslidden era (1945) and speaks of instrumental people whom God used to prophesy in counties of Marion, Ralls, Monroe, Audrain, Randolph and Macon, Missouri.

C. M. Cole take the reader on a spiritual journey through the history of the Church of God in Christ (C.O.G.I.C.) of Northeast Missouri and his personal calling that began in Los Angeles, California. The revelations, both personal and scriptural, shape an understanding of how the message of past unfolded and directional hope for the future. Written in the genuine voice of a dynamic speaker, knowledgeable teacher, and dedicated pastor, you will believe yourself in his presence.

An excellent book

It is a little weak in the beginning. That is because the author necessarily has to give the historical background and geographical setting for the account that he is going to be writing about. As a person from this area, a minister I assume, he hears a sermon while he is in California that changes his life and theology. It is a sermon based on the valley of dry bones, Ezekiel 37. The sermon part is super excellent. Every Christian leader should read it. It was a great blessing to me and restored my soul. I would give it five stars, but perhaps because of the weak beginning, it should only have a four. Anyway, it is an excellent book.

It is difficult to talk about history that is not romantic, or hard truths that expose reality in a way the inspires hope for the reader. We can only change our future if we understand the roots of our past and are willing to subit to wisdom. This book will surprise you, entertain you, teach you,instruct you, potentially rebuke you, and bring you to the solid determination that God can do anything if we yield our will to his. Well worth the read, and purchase as a gift. Valuable to the academic, the history buff, the theologian, and the casual reader.

Good read, but could have had more content or backstory

I really liked the info and the presentation. It seems like the book is a little small for the money, but i still really enjoyed reading it. I deducted only 1 star because the book seems like a short read, and it would have been nice to have some more backstory on a few of the patches, and related topics. There are a few photographs of airfields, and bases, but a little more info on the bases, programs, aircraft, or meaning of the military/intelligence organizations would have been useful and helped explain context.

Also, in probably a minor unrelated point, the cover of the book was a bit mangled when i received it, but didn't feel the need to waste time/money returning it. Amazon just needs to be more careful packing small odd shaped books when in combined order shipping.

I found myself gaping as I read this book, by turns astonished that classified personnel could get away with having a sense of humor on the job and cackling madly at the inside jokes. There appears to be a rich language of symbolism in the patches' patterns, and many an afternoon could be whiled away by the reader attempting to piece it together. I've already recommended this book to several friends, and I can't recommend it highly enough to anyone curious about military heraldry or black projects.

If you are a conspiracy nut, military historian, believe in aliens, collect military artifacts, are into aviation, or any of the above, this may be a really fun book for you!

This is not a dense or didactic book, but rather, it is a picture book with a paragraph or two about each entry. A good supplement to a more serious collection, or a unique coffee table book.

This is the best book that money can buy. I am a Chartered Management Accountant (CIMA) student. I bought number of books of this subject and they didn't help me in any way. Finally after much thoughts I bought this book and I am glad that I did. I was able to clear my professional exams without any tutor support and above all I was placed in the 70%+ category. All thanks are due to the author who wrote such a book that takes care to explain every bit of management accounting. This book is best for the following chapters:

1. Process Costing - Can be tricky during first read, however the best read!!!

2. Income effects of alternative cost accumulation systems

3. CVP Analysis - Simple and Effective, the problems are great!!!

4. Measuring Relevant Costs

5. ABC

6. Pricing Decision - The final problems are really advanced

7. Decision making under uncertainity - Doesn't cover much material though

8. Capital Decision 1 and 2

9. Standard Costing 1 and 2 - This is my favorite chapter and the author does a great job here.

10. Inventory accounting

11. Linear Programming - The problems are challenging to anyone who didn't take a course in LP.

Overall a great book for those who are really interested in learing this subject.

My management accounting lecture did not disclose that cost and management accounting by Drury was the secret of his touth questions in examinations, but when my own research revealed it , the book has since been my main text over the years.

In this thought-provoking book, Davidson, a prolific, longtime writer of African history and politics, discusses not only Africa and its overwhelming problems but also draws comparisons of the conditions and the causes of Africa's malaise with those of Central and Eastern Europe both in 1918 and today. He details the legacy of imperialism and the failures of the nation-states of Africa after independence. In a surprising conclusion, Davidson sees the ground for hope "in one or another mode of the politics of participation." He points to the Economic Community for West African States and the Southern African Development Coordination Conference as proposing projects that have "supposed a gradual dismantlement of the nation-statist legacy derived from imperialism, and the introduction of participatory structures within a wide regionalist framework." He reminds us finally that "even those most nationalist of peoples, the English and the French, might before long find themselves without sacred and sovereign frontiers between them." For 40 years, Davidson (Can Africa Survive?, 1974, etc.) has fought to secure Africa's place in world history. The stakes in this battle have been more than academic, as the commonly accepted notion that ``Africa had no history'' served as justification for the European colonial domination of the continent and its peoples. Here, Davidson shows how that historical denial not only allowed colonialism to take root but also contributed to the imposition of European-style national governments after independence. At independence, according to Davidson, a Western-educated African elite rose to power over traditional African leaders because it was commonly assumed that Africa had no indigenous models for ruling nation-states. Gathering the historical evidence, Davidson shows that, before the imposition of colonialism in the late 19th century, Africa was well along in the process of evolving its own models for the nation-state. The Asante kingdom of modern- day Ghana, for example, was ``manifestly a national state on its way to becoming a nation-state with every attribute ascribed to a Western European nation-state.'' Historians, though, neglected or were unaware of Africa's rich political history; and so Davidson portrays an Africa stripped of tradition. Africans under colonialism were told that, in order to be civilized, they must cease being African--while at the same time they could never be European. Ironically, this view didn't change after independence, with adherence to African tradition still derided as ``tribalism'' and seen as an obstacle to development. What Africa's leaders inherited, says Davidson, was ``a crisis of social disintegration.'' From here he charts the plummeting spiral of economic and social decay that has brought Africa to its current political crisis. Davidson's reach extends through medieval Europe, 19th-century Japan, and to the quandary faced by Eastern European nations today. Very important book

This book is one of my favorite histories of Africa because of the sensitivity and knowledge with which the author devotes himself to the topic of the post-colonial nation state in the world's most maligned continent. This is a good book for non-specialists, which explains with good writing and apt analogies to other troubled nation-projects (namely in Eastern Europe) how Africa did in fact have many indigenous nationalisms prior to colonial rule, which were thwarted and distorted by the imposed shackle of the national boundaries drawn by outsiders who knew nothing of Africa's own traditions, people, or nations.

Many I've spoken to who do not have even the most rudimentary knowledge of Africa (most people that is!) are shocked when I tell them that the boundaries of all modern African nations were drawn at a conference in 1884 in Berlin with no Africans present, based on the geo-strategic concerns of the imperial powers, NOT on any linguistic/cultural unity in the territories created. But this basic fact, so crucial to understanding the fundamental problems facing 20th and 21st century Africa, deserves repeating, and nowhere have I seen any author treat it with as much concern and care as Davidson.

Davidson's contribution to African history cannot be overstated; he has over the years earned the affection and trust of many Africans, who trust him perhaps more than they do any other European to write their history. More than most Europeans, Davidson emphatically and repeatedly asserts that Africa has the history and tools to build successful political entities based on their own values, not those imposed on them from outside. They did so prior to colonial rule, and they can in the future. Davidson is a treasure and this book is as well.

Fine book from one of the leading historians of Africa

In "The Black Man's Burden: Africa and the Curse of the Nation-State" Basil Davidson argues that indigenous African societies were developing into nation-states much as Europe had during the last few centuries, and that colonialism -- far from being necessary for people who could not govern themselves -- actually fouled up everything. This book focuses mostly on Africa in the 20th century, which, for most of the continent saw the last decades of colonialism and first decades of independence. Davidson draws on lessons learned over a lifetime to describe the nation-state both in Africa and Europe (a surprising amount of the book describes the advent of the European nation-state). He also describes many personal experiences from decades spent studying Africa. This is one of many fine books by one of the 20th century's best historians.

Desperate, Leo and his father, Oscar, plan for Leo to take $80,000 worth of bonds from Horace's safe-deposit box. However, knowing that he is to be short-lived, Horace has his box brought to him. Discovering the theft, he informs his wife that he has willed the bonds to her. He promises to say nothing about the theft, calling it a loan. Cruelly, Regina recalls their unhappy married life, causing Horace to be stricken with a severe attack. Regina refuses to get his medicine upstairs, hoping that the effort of climbing may prove fatal. Horace collapses. Then Regina blackmails her brothers into giving her 75% of the business instead of their planned 33 1/3%, or she will reveal their theft. A Tremendous Story of Familial Greed

"The Little Foxes" by Lillian Hellman is a brilliant display of a family driven to disaster by overwhelming greed and desire. Regina, Ben, and Oscar Hubbard are siblings who work together, forsaking all others, to obtain for themselves money and power. These three "foxes" attempt to form a partnership with Mr. Marshall, a business man from Chicago, which would help to bring the northern cotton factories down to the south. Originally, it is agreed that the three will split the profit evenly, but Regina grows greedy when she realizes that there is a possibility for her to get more. She deceives her brothers, claiming that her husband Horace has failed to commit to the plan because he desires a larger percentage of the profit. But when the ailing Horace is brought home by his daughter Alexandra, he learns of the plans of his deceptive wife. He decides to take no part in this plan saying, "I'll do no more harm now. I've done enough. I'll die my own way. I'll do it without making the world any worse. I leave that to you." Once again, the evil within the Hubbard family strikes when Horace's money is stolen and invested without his knowing. Instead of growing angry, Horace forms a perfect reasoning for the situation, one in which all the good left in the family will benefit, and all the evil will suffer. But despite Horace's belief that he had tied his wife's hands this time, she still reigns the victor once again in the end.
Throughout the play, Hellman utilizes the development of one character in particular to help parallel the realization of the evil and greed within the family. Horace and Regina's daughter, Alexandra, is perhaps the only innocent family member left in the Hubbard clan. She innocently believes that her trip to retrieve her father from a northern hospital is simply to bring him home and never considers her mother's selfish motives. The "foxes" even consider utilizing Alexandra as a tool in their sick and twisted plans by having her marry her cousin Leo; through this, they could keep the money in the family. But as the play continues, the readers begin to realize that Alexandra will not be duped into following the horrible footprints that her family has left throughout the South. Instead, the readers realize her revolt with the final words of the play, "Are you afraid, Mama?" This quote alone foreshadows Alexandra's breaking away from the family to form a life of truth and happiness of her own. Hellman develops Alexandra in this way to show the possibility of a little sunlight in such a rainy and horrible lifestyle.
Overall, Hellman's play is a tremendous success in developing a set of characters who falsely show love to each other in order to help obtain riches and powers within each of their own lives. This brilliant show of intense familial greed illustrates how such selfish desires can lead to the breakdown of not only a family, but each member within it.

The Little Foxes

The Little Foxes written by Lillian Hellman is an excellant read. Hellman's play shows the evils and innocence of the south that plauged it at the turn of the century. Hellman divides the characters of her book into the evil and innocent. The innocent not being able to stop the evil and only standing by and watching it happen. The Little Foxes shows that people brought up in bad times, surroundings and society can overcome these ills or fall prey to them. The Little Foxes is an excellant and captivating read with the good, the bad and the ugly of society. I liked The Little Foxes because it is a dramatic read with lively and spirited characters who keep you turning the pages.

I have seen this particular book in its television version. so I am lucky to be able to envision the characters. had I not seen it I still would have imagined each character as the same. I love this book.
read it!
