The essential, must have, glass engraving book

The explanations are clear and concise, and it covers everything from the basic tools you need to get going, first lessons and the basic cuts, how to build a drip table for water cooling, more sophisticated cuts, and quite a bit on polishing and displaying, and where to find glass, equipment, and supplies. Plenty of drawings and photographs which complement the lessons.
This book is simply the most bang for the buck of any book I've ever bought on any subject. And the pictures are well done, which is a ture rarity in a glass book.

At this time, a definitive resource manual.

Mr. Graham has the unique approach to glass engraving that you do not see often. He describes the occupation in easy to understand language and the techniques seem easy to master. Because I read this book, I intend to pursue glass engraving as a hobby now and maybe something serious when I retire. Thanks Boyd.

Very helpful book

I have been doing glass engraving for the last couple of years using a Dremel engraver and while this has worked well for me I wanted to learn new techniques and tools that I could use to create better glass engraving. Recently bought two books on this subject from Amazon and this one I found to be most helpful. While I will not be using a lot of the tools and techniques discussed I am glad to know more about what is available. For me it was useful book in an area with very little literature.

Yes, tt's that good.

This review applies to the 2003 edition of the text.

MBA & long time global tax structurer. For tax info, i rely on BNA or CCH but thought i'd have a gander at economics & tax. I'm not a fan of socialist French economics; Piketty in particular (yech). Massive reservations about Salanie... (Piketty was a student, i gather)... I'm really glad to have ventured. Not only is this little text approachable and of infinite value but Salanie's other text, the Economics of Contracts, is an equal gem. Shhh....

Salanie not only shares the history (threads) of classical & PE tax systems but also explains (unties the knots (tax & economics models)) which act as frameworks for public policy.

Grounding tax systems in Musgrave's public policy (1959) and others, and then springing from there, this is a much needed primer on the roles of tax/fiscal policies which underlie primarily the western world's economic systems.

Yes, this little gem is worthy of "summer reading with quiz at end" for all members of government & information agencies Congress, Parliament, Directorates, etc.

Possible enhancement for a 3rd edition might include the instantiation of economics principles by way of specific references to US/other Tax Regulations/Codes/Laws.

In all, despite being a French economist, recommended without reservation.

A Garfield classic

To say that I am a fan of Garfield the cat would be putting it mildly. Although I am more of a dog person (since I grew up with dogs), I have to say that in terms of comic relief cats are funnier, Garfield the cat in particular. I have loved Garfield since I started reading his comics back in the early '80s. His constant putdowns and insults are a neverending source of laughter for me. It was inevitable that Garfield would make the move from newspapers to television. His first special was "Here Comes Garfield". I still have my copy of the book. Like the early Garfield animation, the drawings in "Here Comes Garfield" is a bit crude but a lot better than what he looked like in the late '70s. The story revolves around Garfield trying to rescue Odie from the city pound after a neighbor calls the pound on the mischievous pair for terrorizing his small terrier. The story is both funny and poignant. I'm almost thirty and I am still a big fan of the fat, orange tabby cat who is the size of an aircraft carrier.

Touching Garfield!

This movie/book was very very sad. I read the book in school. When I rented the movie I got teary-eyed. Garfield thinks back on his relationship with Odie and all the mean things he did to him. Read the book it heartwarming, touching, and sad. Be sure to have a tissue handy. The movie is more sad then the book. But they are both good.

The older editions are better

I have the third edition and the latest edition of this book. In my opinion, the later editions have been dumbed down considerably. In addition to developing the basics of vector analysis, the older editions included splendid discussions of curvilinear coordinates, tensor analysis and touched on differential forms (the wedge product being introduced). While the latest edition features appendices covering specific applications such as Maxwells and Navier-Stokes equations, the explanations are far too brief to be of much use. I suggest that interested parties attempt to get used older editions whose content were presumably under the control of Davis (not Snider) being much better written and probably less expensive. The older edition had few typos with very useful and entertaining problem sets. A better alternative book might be "Vectors and Tensors in Engineering and Physics" by Donald A. Danielson in paperback.

good introduction

I just finished a class on Vector Analysis that used this book. This book is good for those who are interested in vectors. The authors start off with the basics and then move quickly to the more difficult lessons. Basically this text treats the material the same as a calculus text does with a couple of exceptions. First, the book moves more quickly than a calculus text, so if you are shaky on the first part i would advise having a calculus book there with you. Second, this book shows the proofs in a more precise manner that the calculus text that I used (Stewart). You study the same equations and theories, but now you have harder exercises to do at the end of the chapter (with most of the answers in the back of the book). So I would recommend this book to those interested in vectors who are familiar with them. Otherwise you may want to look at a calculus book to get up to speed first.

Good for reference, not so good by itself

This book was used in my vector calculus class at UCSD. I think if I was in one of my upper division engineering classes it would be great to use as a reference to help me figure out problems. However, as a math book alone, this was not too helpful. Many of the explanations lack clarity and are from a mathmatician's point of view (in other words, very difficult for lower division students who are not math majors to understand). Also, a lot of the problems are practically impossible. The only reason I did alright in this class was because I had a great teacher. I would recommend this book for people who are in science or engineering classes and need a superficial introduction to vector calculus, but NOT for math classes that go into deep analysis of vectors.

This book of previously unseen work, the result of years of research and cataloging by Mendieta authority Viso, is a must-have for fans. For those unfamiliar with her shocking and vibrant work, this is a fantastic introduction to Mendieta's demanding exploration of violence, the body, religion and the natural world. Characteristic, and perhaps the most disturbing, of her pieces, is Rape Scene, part of a series inspired by real events: "workshop participants invited to visit her apartment at a prearranged time... discovered her apartment door ajar. Inside the artist was posed silently, doubled over a table in a pool of blood with implements of violence scattered about." Working in public venues and frequently using her own body (or her blood) as a medium, Mendieta attempts to blaze a new path with every series of images: "My works do not belong to the modernist tradition... nor to the commercially historical-self-conscious assertions of what is called post-modernism." Beautiful book

This book is full of beautiful color pictures, as well as some journal pages and more "hidden" Ana ideas. It has enough text that you really learn about the artist in many phases, yet the pictures really make this a one of a kind book...it really makes you feel like you are entering her world.

A little book with a lot of helpful content.

There are so many 'How To' books on self-publishing and how to profit from your labor that it can get all very confusing and overwhelming. It's quite the jungle from which you can easily get lost in. I have read my fair share in this particular genre and my head is usually spinning ala Exorcism style rather than being enlightened. At the crux of it is understanding the *fundamentals* of the self-publishing world and the clarity of the content.

With this brief primer, Joanna Penn breaks it down in a bullet by bullet point many aspects of the self-publishing world but more importantly advice for writers to keep focused and motivated, creating a battle plan on productivity and making a profit, as we'll as helping the newbie in how to navigate the multiple social platforms to maximize exposure and marketing yourself as much as your work. She provides excellent Note Benas on topics I would have never considered: like the legalities of self-publishing, audiobooks, blogging, the pros/cons of being picked up by an agent and ebooks vs traditional publishing--and everything in between. She provides many useful resources that are free on her website and references she utilizes as a fiction author herself.

This book, however, does not provide HOW to write a novel. Instead, I would recommend K. M. Weiland's books on how to structure, write, plot, etc, your books. I religiously visit her very, VERY wonderful site [...]
If you're serious about being a writer and not dreaming of becoming one--and Ms. Penn is quite serious in helping you become a published author--this is a MUST READ. ***And it's F-R-E-E!*** As I said above, this is a very SHORT introduction and does not intimately delve into the specifics. It's more of a foundation book. Those that have been reading self-help guides on self-publishign and marketing, this book will seem very basic. But that's the point. It is a great starting point if you don't want to be quickly confused or overwrought from the bombardment of information. From this novel, you can start venturing to other self-help books on publishing. I would highly recommend her other books, visiting [...]and follow her twitter page for daily free advice and useful links. Ms. Penn is a vital resource for me and it should be for you. Her books will become your Self-Publishing Bible, I guarantee it.

Great information.

This book is really great. I am a huge Joanna Penn fan anyways. I follow her channel on YouTube. I absolutely love her stuff.

This book is good for beginners as well as people who have been writing for a while. I often have a hard time finding books that are useful to someone like myself who has been writing for a while. This book was helpful. It was very specific and gave lots of resources.

One thing I love about Penn is how open she is about her finances. In this book she gives a percentage breakdown of where her income comes from and that was very helpful to me.

My only negative comment about the book is that I bought the paperback and there are a few places in the paperback that appear like they were a link in an ebook. So, if you are thinking about grabbing this book you might choose the ebook version over the paperback if you really want the links.

If you are a writer or starting a career in writing and hope to make money from it, I strongly recommend that you get a copy of Joanna Penn’s book and read it before you write another word. Firstly, it will save you a lot of pain by helping you to avoid the many pitfalls that await the newbie writer, because Joanna experienced them during her career and she has kindly pointed them out and advises you how to avoid them.
Secondly the book does not only tell you how to avoid pitfalls. It tells you what to do to become successful as a writer. She lays out the journey in a simple straightforward manner that is easy to follow and makes you feel that you can do it too. She then shows you how to make money as a writer entrepreneur. However, the book does not guarantee that you will succeed. It shows you how. The rest is up you you.

An exhaustive and up to date coverage of advanced Docker topics.

After a 2015 under the spotlight, which consolidated its position, Docker has become the de facto solution to get those monoliths that were split into micro services served through containers. Docker per se did not really create something completely new and revolutionary, since containers have been there since ages (Solaris Zones anyone?). But it certainly did make the whole thing easy to use for us mortals. The impact Docker had on the IT world caught the interest of giants, such as Amazon and Google, as well as that of a horde of small start-ups. This, coupled with the code being freely accessible on GitHub, resulted in a lot of new versions being released with new, juicy features; and it also resulted in lots of conferences, blogs and, luckily for us, books. In the last 12 months, indeed, the amount of titles dedicated to that blue whale significantly increased, and we now have quite a good selection of titles to get started, as well as to learn advanced topics. Using Docker belongs to the latter category. It targets experienced professionals interested in deploying and orchestrating infrastructures through Docker.

Released at the end of 2015, and covering v1.8, using Docker, which spans almost 400 pages, is divided into three main parts: the basics, (continuous) deployment and orchestration, and, last but not least, a series of chapter covering miscellaneous topics, among which that very promising dedicated to service discovery.

As mentioned above, Using Docker is a title that targets experts. Despite this, the first chapters cover the very basics: the architecture and a quick listing of the commands to interact with the daemon. Before getting a little deeper into these chapters, let's say that, overall, this first part is by far the worst of the whole book. Why? First of all, a book that cover topics that are meant for experts (someone new to Docker won't certainly start with how Docker couples with Jenkins or Puppet, after all) should not waste pages listing each and every command. Not only they are supposed to be known already by the reader, but, most important, the official documentation is quite good. Next, while describing the Docker architecture never hurts, more space should be dedicated to the concepts of union file system, cgroups and namespaces. They are barely touched or not at all. On the other hand, let's praise how the author explains the build context and volumes. The examples used are concise. On top of that, we are also given hints to avoid common pitfalls.

The second part of the book covers many aspects of a software life cycle and how Docker can be part of each of them, that is, how we can take advantage of containers in the many different steps our application passes through, from development up to deployment, passing through continuous integration. Throughout these five chapters, an interesting Python Flask example is used as a reference.

Continuous integration is covered in the eighth chapter and is certainly among the best chapters of the whole book. The author first discusses the different approaches to get Jenkins and Docker working in synergy, then, through a step by step approach, he shows the reader how to automate the whole testing process so that when a push is made, Jenkins fires up containers, runs tests and stores safely the resulting logs. The examples are easy to follow, despite their complexity, and significantly help the reader getting a better understanding of the concepts being taught.

Among the other concepts tackled in this second part of the book are deploying containers, which covers several third party solutions, such as AWS. Here Docker Machine is introduced to the reader. Again, what stands out is how the author presents many different approaches, so that the reader can have a better global understanding. In this case, Adrian covers bash scripts, a process manager, and using a configuration management system (Puppet, Chef, ...). Sharing secrets is also briefly discussed, even if it's one of the most important open topics of the community and, as such, would probably deserve a title on its own. Logging is another chapter of this middle part of Using Docker that the reader should read over and over. The author presents different techniques to gather the logs so that, once centralized, they can be better exploited. The ELK stack is being beautifully discussed here.

The last part of the book does not have a specific topic. Among these few chapters is service discovery. Again Adrian does a great job to introduce the concepts and the possible solutions. All of this with many concise examples that the reader should definitely try out.

Overall, a very good book, no doubts. While the first part was so so, the rest of the book provide those interested in advanced topics with up to date theory and examples. Definitely suggested.

Excellent resource for learning Docker

This book was exactly what I was looking for in regards to learning Docker. The beginning chapters gave clear insight into the history of Docker and how it evolved from virtual machines. I got a good sense of the purpose of Docker and why so many people are excited about it.

Where this book was great for me was in the 6th chapter where the author shows how to create a simple web app in Docker. For awhile, I've been trying to deploy some Python code online and I was not sure how. This chapter was coincidentally programmed in Python using the Flask framework. I cloned the github resource for chapter 6, and plugged in some of my code. Within less than an hour I had my code running on localhost the way I wanted!

The author is extremely knowledgeable about Docker and takes the time to point out many gotchas along the way in footnotes. I appreciated this attention to detail. He also evaluates a lot of addons and tools that work with Docker, and the trade-offs were presented well explaining exactly why you would use one tool over another. At points he mentions which technologies are still evolving, and where to check for updates.

The last few chapters in this book were heavily into the networking side of things. Some of the material was quite advanced information about production systems.

One minor issue with this book is that there are quite a few typos. I noticed one spelled "oen", and chapter spelled "chpater" in the book. Also, there was one place where "was were" was in a sentence, along with a few sentences not starting with capitals... I was seriously wondering how a spell checker did not catch these. I am still giving a 5-star rating though because the author's examples happened to be in the programming language I am using with an example to do exactly what I wanted. Additionally, I am happy to see how recent the information in this book is, even if it means there will be typos.

So far this is an excellent book. Learning a lot. It is for the person who will deploy containers. Not for the person who want to create containers from scratch.
