Wealth of Information - Lack of maps

Let me start by saying this book is a treasure trove of information on the developement of Chicago as a railroad mecca. Very detailed information over a wide variety of railroad topics. I did feel as if the author did repeat himself though. He would touch on topics in one section, only to later go back to those topics in their own sections. I had the feeling of "didn't I already read some of this?". Also lacking was any maps that showed the developement of Chicago's railroad network. At the very least, a map of the current railroads and where they go in the city could have been included, and can be easily gotten from the Chicago Operating Rules Association (CORA). I have one on my wall.

So, if you know something about Chicago (who goes where) this book will tell you why they went there. If you don't have a good idea of which railroads are where in Chicago, it may be a bit of a tough read for you.

Good information, but it needed editing

This book is much-more railroad-oriented and a better read than Ann Keating's "Chicagoland - City and Suburbs in the Railroad Age" -- although it is not a great hunk of writing. It, too, unfortunately reads too much like a research paper or dissertation -- filled with quasi-useless statistics to the point of being slightly stat-heavy, in an effort to impress someone.

But there are some great nuggets if you don't mind doing some digging. The book, while well-organized into salient chapters, needed a professional editor to guide the author and also polish up the text. The author frequently repeats thoughts and passages on nearby pages, leading me to believe it was read by some college prof for a grade before it was sent to a publisher, without being proofread.

What a fun read! This will make you feel like a kid again, remembering your Lionel, American Flyer or HO train sets. Mr. Young amazes you with well researched facts and rare illustrations on how dominant the railroad was in developing this great land, and especially Chicagoland. I have found that my consciousness has changed and each time I see a track, wait for a train to pass at a crossing, or go for a train ride, I feel a part of something great and wonderful about America. This is a thoughtful gift for your friends who feel the romance of trains in their lives. Alllll Aborrrrd!

The Age-Old Kieso Problem

Except for having to buy it new, there are reasons to like the Kieso series including this 13th edition of Intermediate Accounting, which is really Financial Accounting II. These authors have done everything to make the subject progressively more accessible in each edition. I know as I suffered through the courses once too. I have a master's in accounting and am a CPA. It's surprising how many accounting texts assume the student has certain prerequisite skills and knowledge and equally surprising how so many accounting professors want to lecture on what enhances their knowledge base instead of teaching to the student. The Kieso books are really teaching books. I buy used recent editions for myself just for reference since they're so well done and so cheap. Not all CPAs do that but I practice financial accounting.

You'll be lucky if the professor is permissive enough to go with an older series because most students quickly sell these books once the course is over, so used editions are MUCH cheaper. But most professors insist on the most recent edition. I think they're motivated because their authority rests on being up to date. In this 13th edition, there's a big emphasis on International Accounting Standards, and you can be sure the professors want to bone up on this themselves. The financial meltdown has discredited the whole U.S. financial complex, and one result is that the pull is now stronger toward international accounting standards rather than U.S. GAAP. Also, the authors anticipate that everyone wants to use the cheaper previous edition, so they always change the end of chapter problems. The publisher also provides the professors with additional materials including exam materials, so there's always the incentive for the professor to use the latest edition and claim that it's the only acceptable one due to the end of chapter problems.

These are really heavy books - no fun to carry around. The book weighs 6.2 pounds. That's ridiculous. 1,440 pages and you darn well have to know this material. This gives a hint why so many people, despite knowing that good accountants tend to stay employed in a recession, won't even consider this route. But at least the Kieso books, other than their workbooks, are hardcover with large dimensions and quality paper and binding. Nothing is worse than using a thick softcover text that feels like a phone book. Unfortunately they're expensive new, and you might one day be buying the 18th edition used for a fraction of this price.

Note, if you need the WileyPlus access code, it is NOT included with this book. If your professor makes you get the code, you've got to spend even more money. You get this access code at the Wileyplus website. A kind student emailed me that the code now costs $83.50 at the site. Wiley also puts in place separate deals with some but not all college bookstores, although then the prices vary a lot at the college bookstore level. Sometimes, depending on how the professor intends to use the WileyPlus resource, you might just ask the professor and get the code, but those cases are rare.

A word of caution and encouragement: This Intermediate Accounting course along with the first one, Financial Accounting, are the two that were traditionally used to weed out students from becoming accounting majors. You've got to spend a lot more time on this course than you usually would for a typical course. Good luck - I wish you the best!

Excellent book, but no solutions!

This is an excellent book, very well written and comprehensive. However, without an instructor or a complete solutions manual, this book is impossible to use! When are authors and publishers going to learn that a beautifully thoughtout set of exercises is utterly worthless in a quantitative subject like Accounting without the solutions available! I'm presently taking a course from this book, however I would never buy this book for personal use - no answers!

Recommend this study guide

It only covers chapters 1-14 as the other reviews has stated, and is a bit expensive.

However, I got an "A" in my intermediate accounting class, and this guide helped a lot.

It don't replace reading the book, but does give a lot of extra problems and exercises (true/false, and multiple choice) to give more practice and understanding for the test.

I found the solutions to be correct and very few mistakes. When a true/false is false, it gives you the reason why, and on the multiple choice, gives you the reason why the correct choice is correct and why the others are wrong.

The brief review does not begin to cover everything in the chapter, and you will not even be able to complete the exercises/problems with just the chapter review. So, don't feel this will replace the textbook.

If you have the money, I recommend this study guide.

About the Author
Nick Leeson was born in Watford in 1967 and after a stint at Morgan Stanley joined Baring Brothers in 1989. His immediate success led to his transfer to Singapore. The rest is history. In August 1998 it was revealed that he has contracted cancer.

Cautionary tale for traders

If you liked Rogue Trader the movie, then you'll love this book. I first saw that film in 2008 after I got crushed in the market by being long and averaging down eur/usd in October. I was still early on in my trading career and hadn't really learned that you can't argue with the market. (I knew that on a theoretical level, of course, but putting it in practice was a different matter). I could instantly relate to Nick's trading mistakes. Even though I've watched the movie several times since then, I don't really know why I haven't picked the book till now. I agree that's an interesting book, a financial thriller like other reviewer put it. But as a trader myself, I view it as a cautionary tale as well. I think every beginning trader should read it and watch the movie.

This is a truly captivating book for all who have an interest in financial markets. As an insight into how large financial institutions operate, it is a must read for auditors, students and managers in how not to run a business. The pace is fast with the onsetting panic of Leeson being palpable as he races towards the inevitable crash. The Ewan McGregor movie obviously stuck close to the book, but if you have already seen the film it will not distract from the book which adds more layers of complexity to the story. Well written, amazing insights and some thoughtful life lessons given.

Great fun, crafts and facts...

"101 Things To Do While You Poo" Brainteasers by GL Moore. Crafts by Courtney Sanchez. Fun Facts & Jokes by Heidi Fielder. Illustrated by Santiago Gutierrez. Published by @quartokids A high quality (& completely hilarious) flex bound book. My daughter, who just learned to read, saw the cover of this, read the title & had the greatest giggle fit. But inside the content is seriously cool. While there are many actual "things to do while you poo" (mazes, suduko, puzzles etc) there are also a ton of crafts & fun facts. My daughter was particularly enamored with all the different toilet paper roll crafts (which included confetti poppers & rocket ships). My favorite part is definitely the pull out poster which features "Everybody Poops" & shows some cute illustrations & descriptions of different animal poops. Did you know blue whales have pink poop?...me either.

Had us giggling!!!

You can't stop giggling as you make your way through this book! The perfect gift for just about anybody who has a sense of humor. Even my 5-year-old daughter wants us to look at it and work through the pages together. Some stuff is beyond her but the toilet paper crafts are very age appropriate. In the time of smart phones, tablets, and other electronic devices, this is a welcomed break to use your brain and just enjoy light-hearted entertainment. If you are considering this book...don't hesitate.

Let's be honest...the idea of a whole book about Poo did not appeal to me. But my five year old daughter was instantly drawn to the book. As a newish reader, she devoured every page and attempted to work through the puzzles, brainteasers and endless jokes about and images of...you guessed it, Poo. The Bristol Guide to Poo is hysterical! And disgusting. However, I will say for all the s*$t in this book, the toilet paper crafts were actually our families (and by that I mean MY) favorite. Always wondering what to do (besides recycle) those millions!! (we have small children who LOVE to unravel TP rolls) of cardboard rolls?? The back of the book offers some fun crafty ideas for re-purposing those countless rolls we have accumulated!! Read, enjoy - just make sure you bring along your filthy sense of humor!

Grade 6-10?Bolden presents 10 African-American women who have made significant contributions to American life in spite of racial and gender barriers. Many of the individuals profiled are well known, but some of the lesser-known subjects' stories also make for inspiring reading. Bolden tells of Ellen Craft and her husband, who escaped from slavery by posing as a sickly young man and his slave. One of the most unusual women included is Mary Fields, a courageous woman who traveled alone to the Montana Territory in the 1880s. Rough and often vulgar, she dressed in men's clothing and worked at jobs ranging from light construction to carrying the U.S. mail by wagon and stagecoach. Other figures include Charlotte Forten Grimke, Ida B. Wells, Mary McLeod Bethune, Clara Hale, Leontyne Price, Toni Morrison, Mae C. Jemison, and Jackie Joyner-Kersee. The writing is clear and compelling. While these biographical sketches are interesting and provocative enough to attract recreational readers, the primary use for such a title would be research. However, although a selected bibliography is included, Bolden's writing is generally not well documented, particularly the speculations about the women's feelings. She writes easily and confidently about her subjects, several of whom made important contributions to the civil rights movement, and her compelling stories read like fiction, with dynamic protagonists who are portrayed as ordinary women doing extraordinary things rather than unbelievable heroines who can do no wrong. With the possible exception of the colorful Mary Fields, whose biography begins, "She was a 6-foot, 200-pound, cigar-smoking, whiskey-drinking, gun-totin' pioneer who settled her arguments with her fists, and once in a while with a six gun," the women are fine role models for youngsters of any race or gender, and their actions repeatedly convey the message that with hard work and dedication, every door can be opened. Wells, and Mary McLeod Bethune from earlier generations; Clara Hale, Leontyne Price, Toni Morrison, Mae C. Jemison, and Jackie Joyner- Kersee of the present century. Bolden has a knack for succinctly providing just enough context to allow readers to comprehend the significance of the women's accomplishments. Some chapters are livelier than others, simply because several of these women made their most important contributions through long years of organizing, fund-raising, speaking, and writing, and their stories are not as inherently dramatic as those of fugitive Ellen Craft or the salty Mary Fields. Although she is given to hyperbole (the Rockies are not ``many miles'' high), clichs (``It was now or never'' and ``they were stopped dead in their tracks''), and awkward constructions (``Like many enslaved women, forced labor and beatings were not the worst violation of body and spirit that Maria had to endure''), Bolden is passionate about these women and about making readers familiar with their accomplishments. Deceptively simple book

The cover of this book and the title 10 Stories of African American Women are deceptively simple. This isn't just a book about females or African American females. It's a story about inspiring individuals with a vision who changed the community around them and was just very motivating for me to read as an individual. The stories are of 10 different women but they interweave to create a bigger picture of life back then for African Americans- much of which still holds true today- like Mary Mcleode Bethune's wise words in her Last Testament to the people. It's especially important in highlighting through the stories the role that the "South" has had in shaping the African American experience both directly and indirectly.The stories themselves are packed with lots of factual information.I had filled a notebook by the time I had finished. I am West African and though I have read the biography of Frederick Douglas, Anne Moody, Dorothy Heights and others- and would like to read Black Women in White America- I found this book at a local bookstore here and it is the first book I'm reading exclusively on African American women. So it was a real eye opener to me and inspiring read. I had never heard of women like Leontyne Price- an opera singer whom I read broke the record for longest applause at the New York Metropolitan opera, where blacks were banned from before 1950. Or Mae Jemison- the first black female astronaut to go to space in the 1990s. Or Clara Hale- a woman in her 60s that opened the first not for profit nursery for drug-addicted children in Harlem. I mean- how beautiful is that? So simple yet so profound. And that's the beauty of this work by Tanya Bolden- the simple yet interesting story-telling. Also very useful is the short profiles of 21 other women "who dared" included in the end.

While the book is available free on line I prefer to hold it, underline it and carry it around. This is an introduction to the fact that groups on earth are influenced by the movements of the planets. While this is generally disregarded by most investors and traders. All who disregard it have not studied the subject. Even those that have studied the subject get it wrong as they do not have a background in trading. Those that follow Elliot wave will be surprised to see that there is a relationship with the planets. The greatest trader in history was an astrologer. W D Gann and his primary method of long term forcasting was astrology.

If you're in your 20'sor 30's and beginning to invest for retirement or plan for buying a home, this is a book that gives you an advantage, a far better shot at retiring in your 60's without counting on Social Security being there as your primary income.

Great series...however

There are so many things that were left completely unresolved. I really hope there is an offshoot series, but at the same time so much of Cara's story wasn't finished that I hate to say goodbye to her. I mean really

Does she die a 3rd time and become the Morrigan?
Does Setanta keep trying to kill Lily?
Did Fiadh actually kill the babies?

Can Drake find happiness?
Do Brendan and Cara have a happily ever after or just a lifetime of stolen moments?
Now that Brighid is back, what happens next?
What happened to Pol and Alssya?
Does the old lady from across the water bring a new religion?

There are so many more...sigh. Again, the series is amazing, well written, fully fleshed out, drama packed and I loved it. I'm just a tad disappointed at the lackluster ending after all of the wild twists and turns we took to get there. I'd definitely be excited to read more, especially if we got some answers.

Such an emotional ending to an amazing series! I have so enjoyed reading each book in the Chaos series, and it saddens me to see the series end. Author Claire Farrell has yet to disappoint as each of her characters and the world they share pull you in from the start and keep you hooked to the very end. I do not want to give away any spoilers, but I will say that this series ending book was all I hoped it would be, and I am glad to have come across such an amazing author!

I have read this series in baited breath and I'm sad to see it end. I loved reading the characters progress and how they each achieved their own goals through heart ache and triumph. The sacrifices they made for their own goals and how it shaped the world around them. I do wish it would continue but I feel as though its right. I would suggest this series to anyone and I hope you find solace in the pages of these books.
