The Aurora Series continues to deliver.

Aurora Centralis, the fourth book in the Aurora series, has continued on in the tradition of the previous books in this series.
Bridgeman's characters continue to grow in depth, and her action sequences never fail to get the pulses racing. Just when you
think you know what is going to happen next, there it is again: that unexpected sting in the tail. For those of you who have become familiar with,
and enjoy, the characters in this series, there are some shocks in store for you, and just when the reader is led to believe that threat has been averted....Bridgeman very cleverly reveals the maniacal mind of Sharley to the reader with enough implied evil to make your skin crawl.

Enjoyed Visiting The Aurora Characters Again

This is the fourth book in Perth author Amanda Bridgeman's Aurora sci-fi/fantasy series, featuring main characters Carrie Welles, Doc Walker, James McKinley and Captain Saul Harris. It's a series that really needs to be read in order, so if you haven't experienced the Aurora world yet, start with book 1, Aurora: Darwin.
I'm invested in the series and I'm a fan of what Amanda Bridgeman has created here.
That said, there were parts of Centralis that I think could have been sharpened. There is so much foreshadowing, mostly to do with many pages dedicated to Captain Harris' dreams and what he might learn from his deceased relatives and what is written in the 'purple' book.
Second to that, the first half of the book is fairly much taken with the wait for Corporal Welles pregnancy to run to term. I understand that a pregnancy has a timeframe all of its own and short of beginning a chapter with 'Nine months later' - the author has to account for the time that runs. That said, I really think this segment of the book could have been tightened severely, and none of the tension would have been lost.
Now, all that said, I admit to skimming through some of the front half of the book, and through the dream scenes, and I don't think I lost anything because of doing this. I admire the way the author writes, and I very much enjoy the characters and the way this series continues to unfold.
The second half of the book cracks along at a much better pace as we learn more about the impending threat to Earth, as old enemies return, and as Captain Harris confronts the truth of his dreams and his 'gut instincts' and embraces his psychic/supernatural side.
I don't think Centralis will move Meridian out of my 'favourite' book of the series, but I definitely enjoyed visiting with the characters again and I'm looking forward to reading the fifth book, Aurora: Eden, which is out now.

Great...just great!! Must-read!

This debut authors books continue to amaze and surprise me. Auroras provocative, compelling and sometimes heartbreaking story line continues to weave its way through your mind and your heart from book to book . It just keeps getting better . I have to say though I was very very upset when I lost one of my favorite characters. Though painful to read I couldn't put it down. From tragedy to triumph to redemption , this series is worth much more than the author is charging . Keep this author as one of your favorites .

I have used this book when performing supervision for two BCBA supervisees. This book makes giving supervision easy and is a must when supervising others. I also bought the Reference Manual to assist giving assignments to the supervisees. This book is not to sit on a shelf but to be written into at each meeting. Thanks TrainABA.

Not much Deathnote...

But there are tons of nice pictures. Only problem was there's no pencil or line work included which is what i wanted to see. No thoughts from the artist or anything either. If u want to get into his head a little i suggest vol 13 of the death note manga series. It was a question answer than any fan will enjoy. It was great.

But i digress.....Everything is in glossy color photo paper. MOre finished prodect than i'd like in an 'illustration' book. Some deathnote, but mostly other works.

My View of This Book

I read Helter Skelter in its first edition publishing in the 70's. In the late 70's I also obtained and read Susan's book "Child of Satan, Child of God". I recommend the book if only to read thoughts from one of Manson's most notorious associates and one of the principle participants in the Tate murders.

But what the book represents is less of insight into the mind of a killer and more of an effort to demonstrate to the world that Susan Atkins had now (at the time she wrote this) separated herself from Manson's lethal ideology and recognized that she had made an error "allowing" herself to be controlled by Manson.

What is disappointing though, is that Atkins never (in my feeling) takes full responsibility for her actions during the deadly Manson Family era. I finished the book feeling her words were designed to impress the reader that her participation in the killings were more the direct result of Manson's influence over her, and less of the reality she was a willing participant.

In that sense it appeared she was trying to lay the early ground work for what would become numerous parole board appeals. From early on in their incarcerations, most Manson Family members, now separated from the notorious Charlie and his influence and surrounded by institutional reality, suddenly wanted the world to believe they had changed and deserved a "second chance" with release from prison. This book looks to be written for that specific goal in mind.

The Manson murders continue to fascinate even after all these years. Though they are easily forgotten now after so many decades have faded the memories, they still represent an astounding aberration of human nature in an era in which society was seeming to transform itself from relative orderliness to a complex mix of youthful rebellion, rejection of authority and the overt influence of drugs, "free love" and competing views on the role and motives of government in our lives.

scary, very scary....

I sincerely hope Miss Atkins is the changed person she claims to be in this book, but frankly, I find it almost impossible to believe anything she says. She has told so many lies over the years about the Tate-LaBianca case, I think it's quite possible that even she doesn't know the truth anymore.
Like the rest of the convicted killers involved in the Tate-LaBianca murders, she cops out by saying she had been brainwashed by Manson and had little control over her actions. I believe Manson knew who had the ability to kill and who didn't, and chose the people who went out to kill seven innocent people very carefully. Although Manson had the ability to capitalize on their weaknesses, the end result was these heartless people CHOSE to do his bidding. They could have gone back and told Charlie no one was home or simply refused his request in the first place.
I simply can't conjure up any sympathy for anyone who is capable of comitting such a heartless act and the thought of someone like that being free to walk among us again is terrifying. Atkins claims she has found god and tells us he has forgiven her. I believe god can forgive anyone for anything if that person is truly remorseful for his or her sins, and if he has forgiven her, then her afterlife is assured. However, she is being held in prison because she comitted a crime against society, and society says she will rot in a jail cell for her unspeakable crimes. It's incredibly obscene for someone like Miss Atkins to place such a high value on her own life, when she had no hesitation whatsoever about taking the life of an eight and half month pregnant woman who pleaded in vain for her life and that of her unborn child.
Seven innocent people are in their graves and they will never get a second chance. The killers deserve the same fate.

Interesting view from Sexy Sadie

I am enthralled with the Mason Family, particularly the minds of the women so I thought this would be a good book to gain insight into the mind of "Sexie Sadie", Susan Atkins. It was an easy read, I zipped right through it in a few days. Basically, it starts with a tiny bit of information on Susan's childhood and journey to San Francisco where she met Charlie. From there, it brushes gently over the details and events that occurred with the Tate/LaBianca murders. The last portion of the book, the majority, is her time in prison and her rebirth through Christianity. The primary focus being her rebirth. She definitely becomes intensely Christian, going into her new baptism, constant quotations from the bible and speaking in tongues. I bought it with hopes that I'd gain insight into her mind and the reasoning for the gruesome acts she committed but none of that was touched on, it is simply a book explaining her acceptance of Jesus Christ as her savior, becoming a child of God. I think that's fine, whatever made her happy, whatever gave her true peace within her tortured soul. If you're interested in reading about each Manson Family member and their take on their experience, then do read this book. I'm glad I did. If you want a detailed account of the crimes, investigation, and trial, read Bugliosi's book. But what the heck, read both, it's an easy read.

About the Author
Brian Marick learned Ruby in 2001 because Dave Thomas and Andy Hunt, original authors of "Programming Ruby," wouldn't let him off a shuttle bus until he said he would. He's been programming in it ever since, and he's made a special effort to teach it to software testers. His previous book is "Everyday Scripting with Ruby," which began as a tutorial for those very testers. He's not a Ruby programmer by trade. He makes most of his money as a consultant in the Agile methodologies. (After getting off the shuttle bus, he was one of the authors of the "Manifesto for Agile Software Development.")

Awkward Treatment of a Challenging Subject

I first encountered this work as the manager of a software quality assurance team. In that capacity, it failed to lend substance to other works that we used as references. Steve McConnell's general works, Software Project Survival Guide, Rapid Development gave far better structure to our overall software management. For test specific direction, we found other works such as the Craft of Software Testing much more appealing.

Updates the craft

In the past I had been leery of whitebox testing because it was outside of the capabilities of most test engineers. However, this book has caused me to rethink my position for a number of reasons. Foremost is the fact that a good deal of web and e-commerce software these days is in the form of mark-up languages and scripts. While these lend themselves to blackbox testing, added assurance can be provided by inspections and other whitebox methods.
This book prepares test professionals to expand their skills and knowledge to take on these tasks by providing a thorough education in logic, operators, syntax and expressions. He also thoroughly covers object-oriented testing, with excellent advice on how to deal with states, classes and inheritance in the development and execution of test plans and cases.
What impressed me the most, however, was the chapter on testing bug fixes and maintenance changes. Mr. Marick's treatment of this topic is the best from among the dozen or so books I have on software testing. He provides a checklist of questions that the test engineer needs to answer, which will provide the basis for a sound test strategy. While this chapter addresses whitebox testing, a lot of the material can be effectively used in blackbox testing as well. One of the gems that I got from this chapter is an awareness that test suites decay over time after software has been released into production. This is an eye-opener because many test groups add to their regression test case library as new patches and releases are promoted into production, but few validate these test cases on a periodic basis.
To the best of my knowledge there is no other book that solely addresses whitebox testing. There are certainly few books on testing, white- or blackbox, that cover as much territory or go as deep as this one. Mr. Marick has provided a valuable addition to the testing profession with this book, and provides a clear path for test engineers to update their skills to meet the challenges of effectively testing web and e-commerce systems.

An excellent book, should be a standard text

This is an excellent book, Marick has done an a thorough job of addressing some of the fundamental issues of white box testing, explaining techniques and approaches clearly and concisely. He addresses the common issues that trip up whitebox testing organizations as well as the more advanced topics.
The book can be read productively by developers and testers. May be a little too technical for managers.
In 20+ years of testing software, I have encountered few books that I would recommend. This book is one of the best, addressing areas and techniques that are omitted from other works. Highly recommended

Dr Winifred Aldrich was formerly Professor of Clothing Technology at Nottingham Trent University. She has also written two books specifically to enable students to extend their knowledge of fabrics and tailored garment cutting: Fabric, Form and Flat Pattern Cutting and Pattern Cutting for Tailored Jackets. Her other books include: Metric Pattern Cutting for Menswear and Metric Pattern Cutting for Children's Wear and Babywear.

Love this Pattern Drafting book!

I bought this book having compared it to Helen Joseph Armstrong in the bookstore. I found it less bulky and easier to find patterns and ideas because the layout is more condensed and not spread over 500 pages. The amount of information in there is phenomenal. I have Dorothy Moore's Pattern Drafting and Dressmaking book as well, but I keep coming back to Aldrich! I drafted her skirt pattern and used pattern drafting principles in her book-and the skirt was the most perfectly form fitting 7-gored skirt I have ever made! I plan to get all of her books on Pattern Drafting. The only reason I haven't given it 5 stars is because the diagrams aren't labeled Fig1, Fig2 etc-so sometimes I get confused as to which diagram the instructions refer to. But it is not an insurmountable difficulty.

Practical and usefull to make your own patterns

After using this book for some time, I can now recommend it gladly. It is a book for those who know how to sew, but need to get their patterns in magazines or other publications. With this book, if you are familiar with the metric sistem (to do this with inches and all its crazy partitions would be madness, i think) you will be able to take your own measures, and construct a whole range of different models that fit you just perfect. It is a method to learn how to draw the basic block patterns and then how to modify them to construct all the variations. All your basic wardrobe is there, including bodyshapers, bikinies, jeans, tracksuits, all kind of skirts and trousers, jersey and tailored dresses and jackets... well, it is really complete. I am so enthusiastic about this book I just bought the one for men's wear, to be able to construct the perfect pants for my husband. A must for any home dressmaker.

Addendum: I am working with the book and have found two big problems so far. There are two patterns with side panels which I cannot figure out, for the sake of me. One is the Semi-Fitted princess line dress, in page 116 (where do the side panels go???) and the other is the Fitted Casual Jacket (where do I draw the panel lines????) Maybe these references are somewhere in the book, but I have been going around and around and I cannot find where to draw these lines). If somebody knows, I would gladly listen!!!
