the ultimate aesthetic experience

As most Kierkegaard buffs will know, this novel is actually a small part of the monumental philosophical tract, Either/Or from 1843. Please don't let that fact keep you from reading this delightfully seductive and disturbing novel. In it, Kierkegaard sets out to describe and explore the life of the ultimate aesthete, Johannes, as he targets an innocent young girl, Cordelia, for seduction. Kierkegaard plays with layers of framing and writes such exquisite prose that at least this reader constantly has to struggle not to be seduced by the beauty of it. His aim in writing the text is, at least in part, to show how horrible Johannes and people like him really are, but a surprising number of people just plain don't get the subtlety of Kierkegaard's irony. Hannay's translation doesn't seem to get in the way (I've read it in the original Danish as well), although I'll leave it to the Kierkegaard scholars to determine whether its really a good translation or not.

I just had the pleasure of rereading this book that I first read 20 years ago on the recommendation of one of my graduate school professors. It's an impressive statement of belief in the power of the mind over the superficial while playing to a wholly inappropriate (but amusing) chord of self pity and thinly veiled self love. A great perspective on Soren's mind.

About the Author
Philip C. Watkins, PhD is Professor of Psychology at Eastern Washington University, USA. The major focus of his research since 2000 has been on gratitude and subjective well-being, which has received funding from the Templeton Foundation and was been published in peer-reviewed journals and book chapters within the positive psychology field, including Journal of Positive Psychology, the second edition of The Oxford Handbook of Positive Psychology, Positive Psychology in Higher Education (APA, 2012) and his own book, Gratitude and the Good Life: Toward a Psychology of Appreciation (Springer SBM, 2013.) He currently serves as associate editor of Journal of Positive Psychology and as made over 60 presentations at regional, national and international conferences. He has been active in APA Division 36 (Psychology of Religion) and served as its APA Council representative and convention program chair. His teaching responsibilities at EWU include the design of an advanced undergraduate positive psychology course, Happiness and Positive Psychology, which he has taught for 11 years, in addition to teaching courses on Emotions and Emotional Intelligence, Stress and Coping, Research in Emotional Disorders, Health Psychology, Introductory Psychology, and Psychological Statistics.

An excellent introductory anthology

"Philosophy: The Quest for Truth," now in its eighth edition, remains one of the better anthologies appropriate to introductory philosophy courses. Lewis Vaughn continues the the great tradition started by the late Louis Pojman in the late 1980s.

The book is divided into the following major sections: What is philosophy? (This first section also includes a brief but adequate discussion of the basic principles of logic.) Philosophy of religion. Knowledge. Philosophy of mind. Freedom of the will and determinism. Ethics. Political philosophy. What is the meaning of life? Contemporary moral problems. (The last of these sections includes the following questions: Is abortion morally permissible? Is the death penalty morally permissible? Do animals have rights? Do we have obligations to the poor and hungry?)

The selections represent a nice blend of classical and contemporary writings on the various issues. On the whole the selections are balanced between the different positions taken by philosophers on these issues as well. Whatever biases the editors may have is not apparent from the selections they have chosen to anthologize.

A couple helpful extras not often seen in introductory philosophy texts are a timeline at the beginning of the book and an appendix on how to read and write philosophy papers.

Great introductory anthology

The first edition of "Philosophy: The Quest for Truth" was compiled by Louis Pojman in the late 1980s. Now in its eighth edition, it remains one of the better anthologies for college-level introduction to philosophy courses.

This anthology is divided into the following major sections: What is philosophy? Philosophy of religion. Knowledge. Philosophy of mind. Freedom of the will and determinism. Ethics. Political philosophy. What is the meaning of life? Contemporary moral problems. (The contemporary moral problems include: Is abortion morally permissible? Is the death penalty morally permissible? Do animals have rights? Do we have obligations to the poor and hungry?)

Philosophy: The Quest For Truth my husband is taking a philosophy class at the local state university and he has really been enjoying reading this book for class. In his opinion for a text book this one at least keeps his interest and it is easy enough to read.

Well-Written, Great Alpha/Beta/Omega Romance

This second book was infinitely better than the first, coming a lot closer to the trademark Lia Cooper magic. ;) The politics and plot were skilfully woven in with the romance, with both being interesting and well done.

This book had editing errors, like the first, although not as many. The author clearly needs better beta [ha! pun!] readers.

And of course, we finally get to see the alpha/omega dynamics in full play. I kind of almost wish we had seen it before now, not necessarily w/the main chars, but to see it influence their culture more strongly than just "alphas are aggressive and omegas the thinkers." Like I wish we had seen someone go into heat before now, so we know how things play out.

Overall I'm much happier with this book than the first, and am excited to read the third.

Not as good as the first, but..

The first book in this series, The Omega Prince, was wonderful. Unfortunately Lia had a hiatus in her writing of this book. This resulted in her mentally moving on to the next book, The Honorable Beta, and to some extent changing the personality of certain characters. The effect is somewhat choppy on the plot. However, if you continue the series, you should read this book, or you will miss things. The Honorable Beta,the next one is much more up to Lia's usual standards. There are a few "edit by spellcheck" errors, but except for the replacement of "heeling" with "healing" when referring to riding a horse, it does not really interrupt the flow of the story.

Could Be Better

I read books 1-4 back to back so these comments apply to all
This is a series and must be read in order. None of the books end with a resolution but there are no cliffhangers; they just stop, to be picked up in the next release. I love the characters and storyline but the proofing is non-existent and it's bad enough to detract from the story, wrong words, missing words, nonsensical sentences. It's painful to read a great story that's written with such carelessness but I'll keep reading as new installments come out because the story is that good.

Christopher Bulstrode did his undergraduate training at both Oxford and Cambridge, and his post-graduate training in London. He has been Clinical Reader in Oxford since 1987 where he has been in charge of the Undergraduate Teaching of trauma and orthopaedics.

Been there, done that

I bought this entire series at once. And regret it. I read the first book and loved it, but then.....if you've read one, you've read them all. The women are all tiny - like 5ft.- and skinny. No tall curvy ladies in any of the books. The men are almost indistinguishable from book to book. Huge guys who like to wear jeans unbuttoned. The sex scenes are the same. Even some of the dialogue. The phrases "So responsive." "Move." "Wet washcloth" "bobbing" "pop" "I'm humbled" were all in most, if not all books. All the men call the women "baby." No variation.
Even a few of the plots were repetitive, such as two stories of women running from arranged polygamous marriages. (FFM) The first 5 books are about one family, then it is just recycled in the remaining books in the series. Large family, all living together in a huge house, one daughter with a bunch of sons. Every book ends with an epilogue that includes a new house and/or a baby. So predictable it's painful.

Just a bit confusing...

I've never felt the need to give a customer review, but I felt that readers should be forewarned that the Author often forgets which person she's talking about. She frequently mentions Logan, but it should be Sawyer, and vice versa...especially when referring to family (she says Sawyer, but is actually referring to Sawyer's family). Don't get me wrong, I loved the story (and have read all of them), but the frequency with which the characters were inverted left me very confused at times.
