DEVIATIONS, a handbook and users’ guide on architectural design pedagogy, pursues the strategy of the Trojan horse, infiltrating a given system’s practices in order to transform them from within. While documenting the opening moves of the architectural design curriculum at the ETH Zurich, the manual exposes teaching to a series of tests. It promotes a departure from the seemingly familiar and stable grounds of recognized design approaches in pursuit of more open tactics – initiating a plea for a new type of architectural practice. Rather than opposing the established order of things, the approach embraces this order while simultaneously working both with and against manufactured conventions. Taking on the operative mechanisms of everyday practice, median standards, and normative action as the very stuff of design, concepts and techniques emerge whose foci are not based on form, but on how architecture might perform. In addition to the orientation provided within the individual chapters, a graphic navigational structure guides readers through the book as a whole and enables them to scan through the work or focus on specific projects. Following the framework of an academic year, the book is divided into a series of sections devoted to the thematic areas: space, program, technology, context and form. Marc Ang�lil and Dirk Hebel have taught architectural design at several universities in Europe and the United States. Over the last few years, they have been collaboratively engaged in a didactic experiment reframing the introductory design course at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich.

Marc M. Ang�lil is professor of design in the Department of Architecture at the ETH Z�rich. Dirk Hebel is the senior assistant professor associated with Prof. Ang�lil s chair; he also teaches at Syracuse University in New York.

For you to decipher

It is a difficult book to understand, certainly not a book to be called a manual. Perhaps that is the nature of this sort of architectural course recipe, and it reads more like an yearbook of a renowned school than for a reader to learn a few secrets behind the didactics i.e. how to analyze students' works or what criteria should be accompanied with an assignment to give criticism. Going through the Master's program myself, it was a mystery to experience such transformation of mind that I often wish to go back in time to pick up what had been said in the crits, because nothing made much sense back then. Hence, it is of great interest when I see a book of this sort and has to be purchased to see what secrets have been unveiled. However, the book is a disappointment in that sense although it provides with a certain new direction in teaching process oriented architecture not revolving around computer. As the introduction is titled 'Inchoate Deviations', that should be what to expect from this book, personal documentation of several years of academic rigors facing formal issues to be shared with.

Not Helpful for the Board Exam

K&S's self-examination book is not a board-review book, and because K&S for better or worse has developed the title of "THE" textbook for psychiatry, several psychiatrists gravitate towards this book thinking it's "THE" book for the board examination.
Material: The book is packed with material that is not on the board-exam. Several theories, terms, and guidelines, if seen in this book could mislead one into thinking it's high-yield when in fact it is no-yield due to the unofficial title K&S enjoys as the leading psychiatric textbook. If you happen to take a look at the book and see the terms recommended for memorization, you'll see "forme fruste" among several other terms never to be seen in the real exam, and will only serve to weigh you down.
Poor presentation: It's not concise. You'll spend more time than needed because it's not presented in a clear and to-the-point manner. Things that other guides have in bullet or chart format that occupy 1/4 of a page might be explained over several paragraphs.
Questions: Not similar to what you'll encounter on the board-exam. As many psychiatrists will know at this level of training, other sources have made attempts to make their questions similar in rhetorical presentation, style, and material. K&S doesn't do that.
So yes, it's not a good board-review book, but how does it rate if you want to be just a good psychiatrist? Even there it has problems. Several of the answers don't have references to the published evidence as to why it's right, it has terms no one uses, so if you do happen to memorize them, you'll likely be the only one knowing these extraneous terms that are not necessary to effectively practice. I've talked to highly respected, published, nationally ranked doctors on many of these terms and they haven't heard of them.

What I like about it is the editing is well-done. Many other guides have grammatical errors. The questions are also all correct. Some guides have a wrong answer here-or-there. If you do happen to like K&S, and a few doctors do, and like reading it for pleasure or reference, that's where this book may be useful.

My favorite review book

I've used Kaplan/Saddock textbook and review questions since the beginning of residency and, after checking out other review books, think it is still the most comprehensive review book around. It has 1500 questions covering every area of psychiatry. The questions have VERY detailed answers and have obviously been well researched. At the eginning of each chapter is a glossary of 'must know' terms which I also found helpful for review. The book was quite sufficient for me to pass the Psychiatry Boards. Great if you don't have time to review the whole textbook. Have not used it for MOC ( yet). MOC is supposed to be very clinically oriented. There is a new edition of this book ( as of 11/2012)and I hope it will have been edited to contain clinical content pertaining more specifically to Maintenance of Certification exams, will certainly check it out when the time comes...

A must-read for startup leaders.

When I first received the book I realised that it's been written by a very young author. It was his first book. The cover seemed interesting. I wanted to read more. This book is the simplest book for leaders of tomorrow. Every chapter is flows beautifully. The simplicity in which the struggles of an entrepreneur have been share is simply superb. I enjoyed reading it. In fact, the way certain notions have been challenged is also pretty good. A must-read!

I have read a chapter excerpted in TruthDig and It added significantly to my paltry knowledge of both trade and local farming versus US/EU TAXPAYER SUBSIDIZED global agricultural corporate capitalism, like Monsanto.
