Awesome for people that want to learn about the history of music

Greenwood Encyclopedia of Rock History: The Grunge and Post-Grunge Years, 1991-2005, which is sixth in the Greenwood Encyclopedia of Rock History series is a very great book if you want to learn about how rock music of our current age came about. I liked this book because I want to learn about the history of rock music. It starts out talking about the beginning of the Grunge era and talks about genres such as Alternative Country and Punk. From these first building blocks of grunge music it tells how these forms of music changed through the years of the Grunge era and transformed into genres such as rap and metal.
One quality I really enjoyed about this book was that it devoted two chapters to rock festivals and the music technology that came about in the 90s. It tells how festivals and tours such as Warped Tour or Ozzfest came about. The Music Technology chapter talks about the record labels and the controversy of illegal downloading of music via the Internet.
I think that if you want to learn about how the music that we listen to today came about and who the first people to create it were, then I highly recommend that you read the whole Greenwood Encyclopedia of Rock History series.

Great book! Good training for the rhythm guitar!

The way I see it, the "Chord Progressions" book/CD is a great companion to the main Musician Institute book for Rhythm Guitar, the "Complete Guide". While the "Guide", another excellent book, builds your playing technique and chord vocabulary and can be used as the main "course book", "Chord Progressions" provides dozens of realistic examples of rhythm guitar as applied in popular music.

"Chord Progressions" is a great value for the money! It is useful for the beginner and intermediate guitar player, as it lays out smart chord progressions and includes 100 well-recorded tracks covering most styles in American popular music, from folk rock to heavy rock, from country to new wave, from soul & funk and reggae to classic rock ballads. Believe me, there are lots! And the guitar sounds right on every track.

If you are a well-rounded music lover that enjoys different styles, particularly from the '60s to the '80s, this book will have something for you. As for me, I am committed to learning ALL of the progressions. I found the music fun and they are a great source for songwriting and jamming inspiration.

Playing the tracks in enjoyable in its own right, but the greatest benefits will come from studying the progressions (rhythm, harmony and melody) and relating it to the famous and worthy music that guided the making of this book.

The author introduces EACH progression with very welcomed info on harmony, suggested playing technique, tricky parts and what makes the track effective. Do not overlook Mr. Kolb's comments as they clarify the "lessons" you should take from the exercise.

As a final remark, please note that the level of difficulty DOES vary from track to track, but NOT in a gradual way. Since the exercises are separated by style rather than difficulty, you might be stuck on a tough "country rock" lick, but if you move a few pages ahead you might find a rock ballad that is much easier. That is just an example, but the message is: browse through the whole book - there are lots to enjoy. Some tracks you might be able to play right away, others will take considerable practice to sound right... But in the end, by the time you master this fine book, you will be ready to join most bar bands in the world! OR perhaps write a hit song based on a "classic" progression.

Great - lots of voicings, takes the dull routine out of practice

I've been doing these progressions in order though you don't have to - but doing so really gives you a feel for how different voicings and sometimes different keys can flavor the same style and make it sound fresh. I had gotten in a rut, droning on in practice trying various voicings for chords and needed something to make such practice more productive and efficient. I tried this book based on the reviews here and found that this guy had done all the work for me in writing out and recording a collection of useful progressions that sound great and really mix up the voicings.

Descriptive narratives are provided in the book for each progression sample. These are really great because they point out the main concepts in a nutshell - things you might already know and understand but might not really talk about in such a well summarized way.

I use the cd that demos each sample to loop the progressions and play along, changing from rhythm to lead back and forth so I am ending up getting more then double my money worth - the rhythm guitar practice is great and then doing lead practice against each progression helps get you comfortable making up rifs and melodies for each style against the various voicings... I can't believe the price point on this. It's so little for so much - get it before they catch on to what a deal this is!

Bottom line: This book is fun, and it helps train your ear and improve your playing. Mastering all the samples will add a lot of variety to your tool kit of sounds - a great collection of voicings to encorporate in your own creative efforts.

Really fun to play and easy enough for a beginner!

I love this learning to play guitar book because it includes ALL kinds of music: rock, country, fusion, bepop, punk, and on and on. Each chapter is a different style of music, so you can flip around to your favorites and learn a bit of everything! As a beginner, I thought the difficulty level was perfect. I learned a lot of new techniques. Only a few of the music pieces (each one is short - not a full song length) were too hard for me. I felt like I improved a lot especially with barre chords and different styles of strumming.

About the Author

Dr. Whitney H. Rapp is an Associate Professor of Inclusive Education at St. John Fisher College in Rochester, New York, where she teaches courses on inclusive education pedagogy, assessment, classroom management, and diversity issues. She is currently serving as Associate Dean of the Ralph C. Wilson, Jr., School of Education. Dr. Rapp holds a B.A. in elementary education and psychology from the State University of New York at Potsdam and an M.A. and a Ph.D. in special education from Michigan State University. Prior to her 14 years of experience in teacher education programs, Whitney taught many different grade levels in a variety of settings, from fully inclusive classrooms to residential special education schools. All of these experiences reinforced her belief that all children can learn and that all children should learn together in inclusive settings. Whitney's current research interests include universal design for learning—particularly strategies to support executive functioning abilities. She presents often at local, state, and national conferences on differentiation of instruction and teacher education. Whitney's spare time is spent with her husband and three children, riding bikes, hiking, gardening, reading, watching movies, and enjoying Owasco Lake.

About the Author

Scott Daley has been updating Project In Depth since the Project 2010 edition. He has been working with Project and Project Server for over a decade as a consultant, a Microsoft employee, and an independent consultant. Scott believes that project management done well is a highly underrated discipline. This book was written with the intent to explain more than just what Project does or why it does it, and to go beyond the standard narratives surrounding Project. Scott has seen Project put to use managing many different kinds of projects, and hopes that this book will clarify some of the reasons why these efforts can succeed or fail.

I'm sure someone else does this better

Quickstart was okay, but it went downhill from there.
Topics seem to be in a jumbled order, have to click links back and forth through chapters (and remember where I came from). Screenshots don't identify what I should be looking at, and in many cases it's hard to tell.
Lastly, suggesting I play with settings to get used to them rather than giving walk throughs makes this book very frustrating (for ex: correcting over allocating resources). He tells you how to do 1 or 2 very basic things, but then gives vague warnings that they may not work as expected. What am I supposed to think will happen when I "play" with more complicated options that aren't discussed? Answer: Sheer anarchy, so I just avoided playing without directions-the exact opposite of actually learning the software.

An excellent resource for understanding how to manage projects with MS Project 2013, but DO NOT open this book expecting to be spoon-fed. The writer assumes at least an introductory level of project management knowledge but also covers some key PM principles. I think he also expects some prior use of earlier MS Project versions. The only complaint I have is that the Kindle for PC version sometimes fails to show blocks of text until you've paged forward and back a couple times.

Maybe I was looking to use this book for a purpose other than its intended use. This is a desk reference, not a way to learn Project 2013. It ended up being a waste of my money.

Andy Bull has written syllabuses for the National Council for the Training of Journalists in Online Journalism, Magazine Journalism, Financial Journalism and Sports Reporting. He is core tutor on the Periodical Training Council-approved Post Graduate Diploma in Magazine Journalism run by PMA Training of London. He has been a journalist for thirty years and has had senior roles on The Independent, The Times, The Mail on Sunday and The Sunday Express. He relaunched The Times Online and was editorial director of AOL UK. He is now a freelance editor, writer, author and journalism tutor.

Looking forward to using

I have selected this textbook for my students in a Digital Communications class at an independent high school. I'm looking forward to using it to teach about journalism in the 21st century. The author has created a companion web site that gives a wealth of additional information that will allow me as a teacher to give real-life examples, as well as help keep the textbook from going out of date quickly.

The world of multimedia journalism is changing rapidly. Teaching about it is a challenge to keep up with all those changes. "Multimedia Journalism" is a tool to help teach the next generation of journalists. I'm looking forward to using this text.

Key Book of Key Conepts

This work is a remarkable condensation, written with great clarity and comprehension, of the words and terms that appear in the writings by and about G.I. Gurdjieff. The entries devoted to Astrology, Enneagram, and Zodiac are particularly insightful and valuable. But those that explain meanings behind everyday words like Fear, Music, Time, etc., are worth reading and considering--not to mention such obscure and work-specific neologisms as Hasnamuss, Legomonism, and Solioonensius. In all, there are 300 explanatory entries arranged alphabetically. Paul Beekman Taylor contributes a fine Foreword, and Sophia Wellbeloved has added a 12-page bibliography, a 4-page index, and biographical entries on 30 or so of Gurdjieff's pupils, both major and minor. "Gurdjieff: The Key Concepts" is a key book.

The Wonderful Flavors of Cooking Wild

Knowing that venison is a more healthy way of eating than some other meats, I wanted to find out more about preparing venison. Perusing my copy of Cooking Wild in Kate's Kitchen: Venison established in me a desire to try many of the recipes. Who better to try them with than close friends who tell the truth and the husband, being an avid hunter. So I call my friends, Tom and Pat Weatherwax, to journey with me on this project. Pat prepared the Venison Steak Fajitas for us all one evening. It was given rave reviews by all. Pat loved that it was so easy to prepare in the crock pot. She was going to prepare it for a family gathering the following week.

The recipe book is laid out in a pleasing format with beautiful pictures of prepared dishes. The sections of the cookbook are Starters; Main Meals; Venison for Breakfast; Pies & Casseroles; Soups, Stews & Chilies; Marinades, Rubs, Butters & Sauces; Game Accompaniments; Premier Wild Chefs; Your Best Recipes; Game Care Tips; Mail-Order Sources; Nutritional Information; and Glossary. The author, Kate Fiduccia, also adds her cooking tips throughout the book, which I found very helpful. The recipes are easy to follow and encourage the novice venison preparer to jump in and cook these mouthwatering dishes. I look forward to trying many recipes from this great collection. The book is 97 pages, 150 recipes, and inviting to the eye. I highly recommend this helpful cooking tool to anyone who prepares or desires to know more about preparing venison.

Cooking Wild In Kate's Kitchen

When Cooking Wild in Kate's Kitchen was available for a review, I jumped at the chance to review it. The subtitle is "Fabulous Venison Dishes from Fast to Fancy." My husband and I have been married for thirty-eight years and he has been a hunter all of those years. I would have to say that the variety of ways that venison has been served has been minimal. We always get some of the venison made into brats and jerky, but then the rest is either ground or left to be turned into cutlets, roasts, steaks, and/or stew meat. The thought that we would have recipes to give us more opportunities to enjoy the venison thrilled me.

So, needless to say, Kate Fiduccia has added a cookbook to our kitchen that is going to get a lot of use. For instance, who would have thought of Tex-Mex Egg Rolls? Not me! I'm looking forward to one venison meal a week with Venison Steak Fajitas and Broccoli-Venison Stir-Fry being the next two on the meal agenda. Ms. Fiduccia has also added in recipes for breakfast which takes our venison meal out of a "dinner only" option. There are many options for meals with ground venison. Another addition that brings "spice" to the book is the chapter on marinades, rubs, butter, and sauces as well as the many recipes for foods to accompany venison dishes. Anyone that spends time in the kitchen realizes that these "up the options" for increased varieties in dishes.

Cooking Wild in Kate's Kitchen also includes recipes from premier chefs. I found it very interesting to see how far Kate has gone to actually hunt big game. She states: "Some of these memorable meals were prepared by seasoned wild-game chefs in unique, five-star lodges, and some equally as unforgettable were prepared by camp chefs in cook tents located hours by horseback from civilization." Now, just how exciting is that? She finishes up the book with recipes from other hunters and folks that love to cook wild game.

The book is very professionally written and would be a wonderful addition to any family's cookbook collection that enjoys venison (or maybe hasn't but this book would make that difference for them). I would like to thank Ms. Fiduccia for sharing these recipes with readers, and for making the venison meals at my home much more exciting. Now I can smile when I hear, "Honey, we're having venison today."

You don't have to be a gourmet cook to cook gourmet! Kate Fiduccia presents a bookful of delicious, healthy, easy to prepare venison recipes made with easily obtained ingredients; and immensely pleasing to the palate. This book could well have been titled the Venison Gourmet.

In addition to a plethora of substantial and scrumptious recipes, Kate, a hunter, included a chapter of instructions on field dressing the venison, as well as practical reminders on doing this as soon as possible; with an emphasis on rapid cooling to protect the quality and flavor of the meat. The advice to "prop it open with a stick" was a nostalgic reminder of the many times my father did exactly that.

Good Framework & History

Provided great understanding on the history and sociology leading to how and why Americans are the way they are and act daily. I found this extremely useful in feeling comfortable in my interactions with Americans during meetings, business lunches, and casual meetings. Helped to level set my expectations relative to my own upbringing in a foreign country.

Helpful Cross-Cultural Preparation and Comparisons

Sometimes leaving our own culture and working in another one gives us a new perspective. This was an impetus for American Allyson Stewart-Allen (one of the co-authors) to write a book to help U.K. residents, among many other non-Americans to understand the ways of American life and business.

Engrossed in watching her videos online at Videojug, I was immediately inspired to read her book. When I received it in my hands in India, I eagerly opened it and began to read it. This book is a must-read for anyone who wants to initiate and develop effective working relationships with Americans.

Secrets of the Americans
Are you curious about why Americans act the way they do? Throughout the book, secrets of interacting with the U.S. Americans can be found. Some of these secrets are there for us to read and understand, while some can be discovered by reading between the lines. How the authors have weaved these secrets and cultural nuances throughout the book are a marvel of authorship. This forces the reader to interact with the author and to think critically about the information that is presented, for a deeper understanding.

Inconsistencies of the Americans
All cultures have values and high ideals to guide its people. America is no different. Why do Americans claim to be informal, but yet require so many pleasantries in an email? Are Americans more worried about `getting down to business' or building relationships? Many inconsistencies can be observed in a culture and it is impossible to learn a culture through stereotypes. Allyson and her co-author, Lanie Denslow has uncovered these inconsistencies throughout each chapter and section. This helps the readers to understand the depth and complexity of the American culture.

Dos and Don'ts While Interacting with Americans
Understanding proper etiquette in any cross-cultural exchange is important. Time and again, dos and don'ts lists are not the best answer. Again, the list of dos and don'ts based on stereotypes limit our understanding of a culture. They are only helpful up to a point. Allyson and Lanie have brilliantly highlighted these cultural rules in the narratives along with the secrets and inconsistencies, to provide a deeper and holistic picture that extends beyond lists.

Cross-Cultural Communication
The other aspect of this book that cannot be left unmentioned is the way in which it has communicated this information to the readers. Assumed that this book is meant for the U.K. market, many spellings, word choices, and even phrases sprinkled throughout the book are uniquely British and not used amongst Americans. While it is impossible to list all English comparisons, the last chapter does quite well in providing an introduction to American English as a comparative study to British English. These lessons are not only helpful for the British, but also for those from countries with heavy British influence, including India.
