Showing no aptitude for a manual trade, he joined the Carmelite Order in 1563 and was ordained to the priesthood in 1567. Under the influence of Saint Teresa of vila, John worked to revive the primitive monastic rule, often against the wishes of religious authorities. Despite periods of imprisonment and banishment and almost continual harassment, John persisted in his advocacy of monastic reform and wrote many of his greatest poems and other works under extreme duress. Achieve union with God John of the Cross is best known as one of the Churchs great mystical theologians, and the central theme of his mysticism is that through a life of pure faith and love of God, the soul may attain union with the Divine. Princess Noire: The Tumultuous Reign of Nina Simone, by Nadine Cohodas

From the author of the acclaimed Dinah Washington biography Queen comes this complete account of the triumphs and difficulties of the brilliant and high-tempered Nina Simone. Her distinctive voice and music occupy a singular place in the canon of American song.

Tapping into newly unearthed material—including stories of family and career—Nadine Cohodas gives us a luminous portrait of the singer who was born Eunice Waymon in Tryon, North Carolina, in 1933, one of eight children in a proud black family. We see her as a prodigiously talented child who is trained in classical piano through the charitable auspices of a local white woman. We witness her devastating disappointment when she is rejected by the Curtis Institute of Music—a dream deferred that would forever shape her self-image as well as her music. Yet by 1959—now calling herself Nina Simone—she had sung New York City’s venerable Town Hall and was on her way.

As we watch Simone’s exciting rise to stardom, Cohodas expertly weaves in the central factors of her life and career: her unique and provocative relationship with her audiences (she would “shush” them angrily; as a classically trained musician, she didn’t believe in cabaret chat); her involvement in and contributions to the civil rights movement; her two marriages, including one of brief family contentment with police detective Andy Stroud, with whom she had her daughter, Lisa; the alienation from the United States that drove her to live abroad. Alongside these threads runs a darker one: Nina’s increasing and sometimes baffling outbursts of rage and pain and her lifelong struggle to overcome a deep sense of personal injustice, which persisted even as she won international renown.

Princess Noire is a fascinating story, well told and thoroughly documented with intimate photos—a treatment that captures the passions of Nina’s life.

From Publishers Weekly
Cohodas follows her biography of Dinah Washington (Queen) with that of another prominent African-American jazz singer—although Nina Simone would bristle at that label, insisting from the very start of her career that her music was grounded in the classical. (Eunice Waymon only began performing in nightclubs as Nina Simone after a failed application to the Curtis Institute of Music.) If Cohodas is respectful of Simone's legacy, particularly the impact of songs like Mississippi Goddam and Young, Gifted and Black on the civil rights movement, she's also forthright about Simone's contentious relationship with audiences and critics, and the possible mental illness underpinning that turmoil. It seems as if every one of Simone's onstage outbursts is recounted, along with every review describing her as a very angry young woman or wishing she'd stop playing protest songs. One of the few areas in which Cohodas shows full deference to her subject is in brushing off rumors of lesbian relationships, although a passing comment that Simone was inexorably drawn to the playwright Lorraine Hansberry raises questions. For the most part, though, Simone's complex personality—arrogance and brilliance in equal measure—receives a long-overdue elaboration. B&w illus. throughout. (Feb. 2)

*Starred Review* Born in 1933, Eunice Waymon was a musical prodigy, amazing North Carolina churchgoers with her piano playing beginning at age four. Serious, proud, and hardworking, she dreamed of becoming a classical pianist and only began performing her unique blend of classical, gospel, jazz, and pop when she took a nightclub gig to earn money for graduate school. Eunice’s spontaneous invention of her alter ego, Nina Simone, is evidence of her formidable capacity for improvisation, the lifeblood of her world-altering music and the skill that helped her survive the bloody turmoil of the civil-rights era. Cohodas infuses every scene with electrifying detail and penetrating insights into Simone’s struggles as an African American musician of phenomenal talent and exalted ambition. Cohodas provides gripping descriptions of Simone’s indelible music along with profoundly moving accounts of her commanding, increasingly militant, and eventually downright bizarre stage presence. From her regal demeanor to her friendships with James Baldwin and Lorraine Hansberry, courageous activism, and the tragedies that pushed Simone into mental illness, Cohodas chronicles every turn with precision and empathy. The result is a wrenching story of how racism can undermine even the most ascendant life, and a dramatic portrait of an uncompromising, audacious, and beleaguered musical genius of conscience. --Donna Seaman

A Worthwile Biography, But Not The Best
By David Penn
Nadine Cohodas' biography of Nina Simone is well researched, yet I find that the author paints an untrue picture of events that supposedly took place during some of Nina Simone's concert performances. Much is made of her erratic behaviour on stage, in one instance in a Billie Holiday Tribute that Simone took part in at the Hollywood Bowl. I have an audio tape of her complete performance. It was one of Nina's very greatest performances, yet the reader is led to belive that her appearance was a disaster. Cohoda's brief review of Simone's 1976 Montreux Jazz Festival appearance (which exists on DVD) makes one wonder if the author actually watched the entire performance. Too little attention is made of what made Nina Simone such an important and original artist. Her prolific recording activity and filmed performances should have been given more attention. I found another biography, "Nina Simone: Break Down and Let It All Out" by Sylvia Hampton, David Nathan, and Lisa Simone Kelly to be a more intersting read. This book does contain some fascinating photographs, though.

A TRUE ARTIST UNDER APPRECIATED
By Wooley in PSL
Nina Simone has often been an enigmatic figure. A tremendously talented singer/musician and a recognized figure in the Civil Rights Movement, she often showed a troubling personality. Nadine Cohodas has done a wonderful job giving us a biography of this prominent lady. Born Eunice Waymon in North Carolina, when she was very young she started showing great musical talent. Usually she is classified as a jazz singer but Simone hated classifications. Her failure to be selected in to a prestigious musical school for being black set a feeling that would follower in her live. Now singing as Nina Simone in New York she became a huge performer and would enter into the world of the black intelligentsia. Soon her passion was the Civil rights Movement. But this book shouts out at the problems she had in life. Often she was perceived as having bad behavior with her audiences, and even friends. Turns out she was suffering from bipolar disorders and these were hidden from almost everyone until after her death. Cohodas does a good job writing about her life and giving us background on her mental issues.

The High Priestess of Soul
By G. E. Harrison
I became a fan of Nina Simone as a teenager in the 60s after seeing her in concert on TV, much to the puzzlement of my friends who considered her 'uncool'. However, I've remained a fan although I never saw her live - I did have the chance to see her at the Bishopstock Festival in Devon UK in 2001 but by that time her voice had gone and I chose not to attend that night and to remember her through her records. There are several biographies of Nina, including an autobiography, which all seem to have their supporters and also their critics, this is the latest and so can draw on these previous memoirs together with fresh interviews to give a comprehensive overview of this unique artist. She wasn't really a jazz singer, a blues singer, a folk singer, a soul singer, a protest singer, a pop singer, a cabaret singer, a show singer or a classical pianist - although her work contained elements of all these genres, combined into Nina's own unclassifiable style.

When first skimming through the book I was a bit surprised that her performing career only began from pages 60-odd onwards but these early pages dealing with the lives of her parents and family and her own young life give an excellent context to her later life and also to the place of black people in America at that time. Nina emerges as a determined and very focussed child, who was opinionated and knew her place in the world from an early age (a foretaste of the diva she was to become in later years). Even in her earliest performances she didn't put up with what she considered disrespect but there are also instances of unreasonable behaviour even in her 20s which must have been early indications of the bipolar disorder that she was diagnosed with in later life.

The book charts her career progressing from small club dates to international concert appearances, a constantly changing procession of backing musicians, her recording sessions and her fight to get royalties from these records. It also notes Nina's gradual involvement with the civil rights movement and her increasing militancy and sympathy with black power. In line with all these the book also catalogues increasing bad behaviour both on stage and off and although some have criticised other books for focussing on this behaviour unfortunately it was unquestionably a feature of many Nina Simone performances in her later years. However, the book also details how many musicians, promoters and friends remained loyal despite the bad treatment they sometimes received from her and also how audiences still greeted her ecstatically despite late appearances, erratic on stage behaviour and failing vocal and musical powers.

I found Nadine Cohodas' book a good, very objective study of the life of a truly unique artist. I've previously read Nadine's 'Spinning Blues Into Gold' - the story of Chess Records - which I also found very interesting but like this book strangely 'cold' - it was so objective that you couldn't tell if she was fan of Miss Simone or hated her. There are some excellent photographs of Nina throughout the book but these are printed on the same pages as the text rather than separate glossy pages, which no doubt keeps costs down but does reduce the quality of the images. The book ends with a comprehensive index, a bibliography, a (very) short list of CD/DVD credits, acknowledgements and 40 pages of notes. The notes contain several very interesting snippets together with the page numbers that they relate to but at the back of the book they are completely isolated from the text - I felt it would have been better to include the notes at the foot of the relevant pages or to annotate the text with reference numbers to link with the notes.

From Publishers Weekly
Woodrell flirts with—but doesn't succumb to—clich in his eighth novel, a luminescent portrait of the poor and desperate South that drafts 16-year-old Ree Dolly, blessed with "abrupt green eyes," as its unlikely heroine. Ree, too young to escape the Ozarks by joining the army, cares for her two younger brothers and mentally ill mother after her methamphetamine-cooking father, Jessup, disappears. Recently arrested on drug charges, Jessup bonded out of jail by using the family home as collateral, but with a court date set in one week's time and Jessup nowhere to be found, Ree has to find him—dead or alive—or the house will be repossessed. At its best, the novel captures the near-religious criminal mania pervasive in rural communities steeped in drug culture. Woodrell's prose, lyrical as often as dialogic, creates an unwieldy but alluring narrative that allows him to draw moments of unexpected tenderness from predictable scripts: from Ree's fearsome, criminal uncle Teardrop, Ree discovers the unshakable strength of family loyalty; from her friend Gail and her woefully dependant siblings, Ree learns that a faith in kinship can blossom in the face of a bleak and flawed existence. From School Library Journal
Adult/High School–In the poverty-stricken hills of the Ozarks, Rees Dolly, 17, struggles daily to care for her two brothers and an ill mother. When she learns that her absent father, a meth addict, has put up the family home as bond, she embarks on a dangerous search to find him and bring him home for an upcoming court date. Her relatives, many of whom are in the business of cooking crank, thwart her at every turn, but her fight to save the family finally succeeds. Rees is by turns tough and tender. She teaches her brothers how to shoot a shotgun, and even box, the way her father had taught her. Her hope is that these boys would not be dead to wonder by age twelve, dulled to life, empty of kindness, boiling with mean. A male friend feeds her hallucinogenic mushrooms and then assaults her. But, like Mattie Ross in Charles Portis's True Grit (Penguin, 1995), Rees beats the odds with spunk and courage. In spare but evocative prose, Woodrell depicts a harsh world in which the responsibilities for survival ultimately give Rees meaning and direction. He depicts the landscape, people, and dialects with stunning realism. A compelling testament to how people survive in the worst of circumstances.–Pat Bangs, Fairfax County Public Library, Va

From Booklist
*Starred Review* In Give Us a Kiss (1996), Woodrell introduced the Redmonds, marijuana farmers from the Ozarks ("It's a strange, powerful bloodline poetry, I guess, but there's something so potent to us Redmonds about bustin' laws together, as a family"). Now he turns his attention to the Redmonds' archenemies, the Dollys, another family of dirt farmers who thrive on bustin' laws together (crank cocaine being their crop of choice). But this time the Dollys aren't feuding with the Redmonds as much as battling each other. Sixteen-year-old Ree Dolly, who dreams of escaping her family by joining the army ("where you got to travel with a gun and they make everybody help keep things clean") is caught in the crossfire when her daddy jumps bail, leaving her stuck with two younger brothers and the prospect of forfeiting their house if the old man doesn't show up for his court date. To find Daddy, dead or alive, and save the house, Ree must ask questions of her notoriously tight-lipped relatives ("talkin' causes witnesses"). When she keeps pushing for answers, the relatives push back. Like his characters, and especially his teen characters, Woodrell's prose mixes tough and tender so thoroughly yet so delicately that we never taste even a hint of false bravado, on the one hand, or sentimentality, on the other. And Ree is one of those heroines whose courage and vulnerability are both irresistible and completely believable--think of not just Mattie Ross in True Grit but also Scout in To Kill a Mockingbird or even Eliza Naumann in Bee Season. One runs out of superlatives to describe Woodrell's fiction. We called his last novel, The Death of Sweet Mister (2001), "word perfect." If that's true--and it is--this one is word perfecter. Great writing; depressing subject
By Mary Reinert
Woodrell has definitely captured what it is like to live in a subculture that is so isolated from the bigger world around it. The Ozark area is such a paradox of beautiful lodges and resorts and, on the other hand, pockets of isolated, poverty-stricken rural poor. Woodrell's portrayal of the Dolly clan is, unfortunately, not unbelievable.

Ree's search for her father who has skipped his bail reflects a parallel search for a better life; she doesn't know where to look for him and her only idea of a better life for herself is to join the Army. The effects that meth have had on the rural poor is devastating. That together with generations of family hardships, feuds, intermarriage, and poverty paints a pretty depressing picture.

I live in Missouri and have just now discovered Woodrell. He calls his writing "Country Noir" which is truly an apt description. This isn't a pretty book, but it is an honest one and one that I would highly recommend for those looking to meet characters not found in most other writing.

a winner, but still champion
By Starved for It
Twenty years ago Jewel Cobb dragged a comb through his greasy, antique pompadour and in that brilliant moment Daniel Woodrell announced his intention to entertain a readership. Predictably Mr. Cobb did not survive that novel, Mr. Woodrell has gone on to publish eight of them and become a leading contender for the title of Most Underappreciated Writer in America (campaigning in the heavyweight division).

It may be that the very voices decrying Woodrell's lack of popular acceptance are at least partly responsible for it. The laudatory reviews, and they are finally numerous, tend toward the use of adjectives like 'dark,' and 'bleak,' and, 'lyrical,' and these suggest literary heavy sledding, reading reminiscent of a high school English assignment. It must be conceded that Woodrell is a serious writer, a purveyor of social outrage and dismay at the human condition, but not a page of his work passes without something to laugh at, cringe from, fret over--in other words the vicarious experience that is the stuff of ENTERTAINMENT.

In 'Winter's Bone' Woodrell continues to make good on his old promise. Though 'Bone' is not as consistently funny as some of his previous books it is a glistening showcase of an ever maturing and deepening compassion. America has no patience for her poor and feels it is in the poorest taste when the underclass is anything but invisible. Classism remains our most pervasive and acceptable prejudice. It is into the teeth of this nasty attitude that Woodrell flings the wonderful, large humanity of his people. Ree Dolly is the latest and most finely drawn of these Woodrellian characters. To read 'Winter's Bone' is to be instructed and ennobled, but really Woodrell means no harm by it. His trick, his art, is to make the hard lesson savory.

The best unknown writer
By David Beck
Why Daniel Woodrell is not a household name says much about literacy in America. Having read most of his books, I can't help thinking, Why don't more people know him? Why don't bookstores carry his novels? Why doesn't someone turn this book into a movie?

Anyway, Winter Bones is one of his best. It is a novel about a young girl who is on a journey of discovery, a discovery not just about her meth lab cooker dad but about herself. It is a picaresque novel, much like Portis's True Grit. She finds "justice" at a cost, but her determination and heart, to keep her family from homelessness, makes her one of America's most down-on-her-luck, inspirational characters in contemporary lit.

Woodrell fills his novels with great descriptions and dialogue. He creates characters whom you wouldn't want necessarily to meet, but are still intriguing, sympathetic and compelling.

Great book! Great author! Read Winter Bones and all of Woodrell's books. Maybe the word will get out, so that authors like Woodrell will be more well-known and praised like a lot of less-worthy authors.

A real 1893 Catalog of great doors, staircases, & Trim
By A Customer
This is apparently a reprint of one of the really great old catalogs of Victorian Millwork! It has fabulous designs for window ornamentation, verandas, brackets, gable ends, fireplace mantels and most especially doors. Black & White sketches show an impressive variety of ideas.

good reference guide
By M. Montvid
This is a good reference to the time period. This is not a "how to" book but rather a period catalog expertly reproduced. This book is good for someone who is interested in creating a home with elements from the late Victorian era.

I'm a nerd for antique millwork so I LOVE this book
By Frequent Flier
I'm a nerd for antique millwork so I LOVE this book. It's from 1893, and predictably the products it depicts are heavy on Victorian frills. Craftsman is more my taste, so I'd love it if they'd release something similar from the 1910's. Still really awesome seeing the old molding profiles, sash construction, what sorts of glass was available, etc.

From School Library Journal

Gr 8 Up-Neil's father has accepted a live-in job as the caretaker of the Wyrd Museum, an old house full of strange and macabre objects that is owned by three elderly sisters who are as disconcerting and fearful as the exhibits. While roaming in the Special Collections Room, Neil encounters a talking teddy bear that blackmails him into traveling back to the Blitz in London in order to rescue his four-year-old brother, Josh, who had been tricked by the magical bear. As Neil and Ted maneuver around London, meeting American soldiers, local people, and even a German spy, a demon breaks loose from the museum into the past as well, and, suddenly, in order to save the future and change the past, they must recapture it. Jarvis tries to do too many things with this story and ends up not doing any of them well. Time-travel fantasy and family drama are mixed in with horror-the descriptions of those killed by the demon are very graphic-and a dose of Nordic mythology and sentimentality. Hints are dropped about the origins and identities of the museum's owners, but only readers with a background in mythology will understand the references to weaving that they make. The plot involving Josh is dropped almost completely until the book's end when he magically reappears, and making one of the female characters an ambitious German spy pushes the whole thing just too far over the edge.

Enchanting
By EA Solinas
I'm a sucker for big fat kids' fantasy books (big fat adult fantasy books tend to throw me off) and I picked up "Woven Path" with great anticipation. I was not disappointed. Robin Jarvis, who wrote the great fantasy book "Dark Portal," weaves an intriguing fantasy story.
Neil Chapman is "our hero," a young man who comes to the Wyrd Museum (a pun on Weird?), a rather grimy and unimpressive building in the East End. Creepy hardly describes the odd museum, run by three old ladies who are... uh, creepy. Who are they? What are they?
Better brush up on Greek and Norse myths, as these bizarre old ladies are the Fates, who weave a cloth composed of the life-threads of all the people of the world into their future. When Neil steps into the Separate Collection, he is swept through time and space to London. In WW2. A scramble will result before Neil can hope to return, with some odd new friends...
The idea of a magical place being run by the Fates is an intriguing and original idea indeed, and Jarvis does it justice. The three are suitably creepy and strange, and the inner mood of their museum matches their personalities.
Neil is a better-than-usual book hero, a very realistic person with great reactions and some very good lines. And the character of Ted was sweet, nuff zed. Jarvis skillfully manages to make Ted believable and sympathetic, not juvenile or stupid.
The writing style is snappy where it needs to be and drawn out where it needs to be, with pretty good descriptions and characterization. I got confused a few times in this book, where the plot took a twist and I inadvertantly missed it, but the story flows well overall.
A wonderful read, and I cannot wait for "Raven's Knot"!

the woven path
By A Customer
This was the first time that I had read a Robin Jarvis book. From the moment that I picked the book up I was captivated by it and I could not bear to put it down. The struggle of the Ned, (sent to find Edie Dorkins in the time of the blitz) with his new friend, Ted, (who had been trapped inside a teddy for years) was heart warming. I have now followed the plight of the Webster sisters, Edie and Ned right through to the end of the third book and I enjoyed all three books thoroughly. I am now searching libraries and book shops for other Robin Jarvis titles. Read this book and you will be as captivated as I was. The Wyrd Museum never has a dull moment.

The Woven Path- a great pick!
By A Customer
The suspense, mystery, and wonder in this book are those which will thrill all. Dangerous spies, talking toys, a boy who is tangled up with destiny, souls, spirits, and demons all come together in this marvelous read. Who has been commiting all these crimes? How does Germany know the exact night to attack? How did Neil get thrown into the past, together with a talking toy? Who are the three women? An intriguing read-one which will not be forgotten soon.

Preaching in Black and White offers a unique look at two distinct preaching traditions and the wisdom they have to offer each other. But this book goes much deeper than mere stylistic nuances, for authors E. K. Bailey and Warren Wiersbe are far more than prominent pastors and preachers. They are men with a penetrating understanding of history, culture, and church tradition―and they are friends who genuinely enjoy and respect each other. The warmth of their relationship shines in this book, matched by a depth of honesty and humility as they address topics of vital interest to pastors, speakers, and church leaders of all ethnic backgrounds. In a winsome dialog format, Drs. Bailey and Wiersbe look at the preparation not only of the sermon but also of the preacher’s heart. They discuss sermon content and delivery and how it all comes together in practice. Taking a well-known Bible story, the authors demonstrate and then discuss their distinctive preaching styles and what it takes to learn from others (sermon transcriptions included). Good book, but imbalanced
By Audio Bibliophile
Preaching in Black and White is a quick and meaningful read. Essentially, it's a transcript of a dialoge between a white preacher and a black preacher. As a white man, I found it very helpful in understanding black churches - cultural, social, and theological elements. In addition to discussing race, the book discusses sermon prep, delivery, techniques, etc. that would be helpful for any pastor.

The only flaw in this books is it's onesidedness - that whites have a lot to learn from blacks, but not vice-versa. On many occassions Wiersbe admits faults of white churches and how black churhes do things better, but Bailey never admits ways for black churches to improve. There is a biography of black preachers in the back, but not of white ones. The included sermon is of Bailey only, excluding Wiersbe. This imbalance is not a major fault, but a bit disappointing given the subtitle.

Notwithstanding the minor criticism, I think many veteran Christians would be helped by reading this book, whether in the pastorate or not.

Great insights from two master craftsmen
By Michael Duduit
Reading this book is like sitting in on a fascinating conversation between two great preachers. They cover a wide-ranging set of topics. Anyone interested in preaching will enjoy this book. A special treat included is a CD containing one of Bailey's sermons.

Preaching in Black & White
By Craig Samuels
A great book to see the contrast in the preacher, not preaching. To read Warren Wiersbe's books is to hear E.K. Bailey preach. A great colaboration from two proclaimers of God's Word.

Good read
By P.V.S.PRAKASH
Excellent reading for children who would have missed the life of 1970s and 80s of India. Going to summer vacation to the native and listening stories from Grand Parents were the norm which is missed by the present generation of children.

Fully revised and updated edition with new study - Women and their children
Everywhere women face choices home or career, money or relationships, secure marriage or free singleness, using your looks to get on or ignoring your looks and getting ignored, competing with the boys or retreating into the sisterhood ghetto, the progress of feminism or the nostalgia of motherhood and apple-pie, women bishops or tea-ladies and baby-sitters?
Our culture has plenty to say on all these issues. But a Christian woman, seeking to live for her Lord, will first of all want to find out God s design, purposes and promises for women.
And here s the book to help. Sarah Collins (nee Young), in this set of nine Bible studies, aims to answer questions such as - What does the Bible say about the big issues facing women today? - How should this affect my own life? - How can I be helped to live like this in a society with a very different agenda? - Some things will be controversial in our culture, even in some of our churches.
This course doesn t set out to be politically correct but faithful to Scripture.
Suitable for groups or individuals, this guide covers all the major Bible teaching specific to women. Set within the big picture of God s redemption of sinners through Jesus Christ, the heart-felt aim is that 21st century women will be enabled to live obediently and joyfully for Christ, as women after his own heart.

Flight of the Garuda, by Tony Duff

Flight of the Garuda is a series of twenty-three songs sung by the Dzogchen master Tshogdrug Rangdrol [1781–1850 C.E.] for the sake of his students. The songs explain the practice called Thorough Cut (Thregcho), which is one of the two innermost practices of Dzogchen or Great Completion. Tshogdrug Rangdrol, who is more commonly known as Zhabkar, later compiled the songs into a text. Over time, this text became one of the most popular texts used to explain Thorough Cut because of its complete and very clear treatment of the practice.

Zhabkar went further and made Flight of the Garuda into the first of a trilogy of texts. The other two texts in the trilogy explain the second innermost practice of Dzogchen, called Direct Crossing (Thogal). These two texts are not included in this book, though a clear explanation of all three texts in the trilogy is given in the introduction. Note that the second text of the trilogy is essentially the famous text by Jigmey Lingpa Guidebook called “Highest Wisdom” (Triyig Yeshe Lama) re-arranged by Zhabkar and put into verse. Jigmey Lingpa’s text is available in English through PKTC, which means that there is a way to obtain the content of the second text of the trilogy without it being translated into English. The third text of the trilogy contains personal instructions on Thogal which were meant for Zhabkar’s students and which might not be suitable for publication in English.

The translation here is a fresh translation of Flight of the Garuda which improves considerably on two earlier translations. The translation was made by Lama Tony Duff in Tibet, while receiving an extended teaching on the entire text by the great treasure revealer Ontrul Tenpa’i Wangchuk. The translation benefits from the exceptional knowledge and high realization of this master and the general atmosphere of pure blessings of the Nyingthig Dzogchen (Quintessential Great Completion) tradition in his retreat centre.

Dzogchen for Dummies
By Matt J.
Flight of the Garuda is a step-by-step set of exercises that can lead one to a deeper understanding of Dzogchen. This book warrants many rereadings, and even more, it is a great, experiential manual. Basically, this was written by a Tibetan hermit named Shakbar. He condenses a broad and difficult set of Dzogchen writings into a series of easily understood songs and instructions for practice. However, this shouldn't be taken as a "Do-it-Yourself" Manual for those who believe they can learn Dzogchen from books.

I am aware of at least three English translations generally available: in addition to this one, there is also a translation by Keith Dowman and Erik Pema Kunsang. Personally, I don't care for Mr. Dowman's version--- I find that it is unnecessarily difficult and complex. In terms of poetry and readability, I prefer Erik Pema Kunsang's version, but that is a matter of personal preference. However, EPK's translation is hard to come by. Lama Tony Duff's version is also quite excellent. In terms of accuracy, this version seems to be the most precise. If one has the access, I would actually recommend both Mr. Kunsang's and Lama Duff's version.

This version also contains other helpful material, such as Lama Duff's glossary and a brief introduction.

Flight of the Garuda
By Jameeechan
Although, as the author says, it is a more direct and literal translation of the original poetry- and it indeed sheds light on the work that previous translations hadn't, I found personally that it lacked the flowing ease and simplistic beauty of the translation by Erik Pema Kunzang.
But perhaps only because that is the translation that I have grown to love so much.
Still, I enjoy having it available to read, even if the translator's opinions in the introduction seems to be a bit self inflated at times.
Gossip aside, if one is serious about realization, texts such as this are indispensable, and a great service to all beings who wish to lift themselves and others out of the sufferings of samsaric existence.
