One of the peskiest things to accomplish for some strange reason for some of us Right brained people. We have the vision, the smarts and heart but a n excellent business plan is ESSENTIAL!! I love the Nolo series. I bought the "Dummy" one for this subject but the Nolo book is really helping me push ahead and im thrilled that I can finally see our organization on paper with economic projections and terminoloy. Will help w any graphs you may want to make later as well, because your biz plan will start to make sense. (or you can clearly see the holes in the project!)

This is not casual armchair reading.

Beware! This is not a Lenin quote book, which is what I was hoping to get. Nor is it a comprehensive selection of selected and essential passages, which would have been better. It is, however, a small book containing four of Lenin's key essays. So although you get the complete essays, the overall selection is too small. His views on life, duty, religion being a drug addiction, the vanguard, and so forth are not here. Lenin, who was prodigiously prolific on the level of Voltaire, deserves better. Consequently, this small sample does not do him justice.

The four essays are "Development of Capitalism in Russia" "What is to be done?" "The State and Revolution," and "Imperialism, the highest stage of Capitalism." I found this last one fascinating, considering the critique by Thomas Sowell in "The Quest for Cosmic Justice," page 121ff.

The essays are both technical and polemic, and therefore boring. So if you are neither economist nor historian, much less a wannabe Che Guevara, then you may want to pass on this book. This is not casual armchair reading.

Dense, but a Good Introduction

The Essential Works of Lenin does provide a remarkably concise introduction to Lenin's thought. It will not be easy for the novice reader, so a perusal of The Communist Manifesto, or other introductory writings will be important to get a firm grasp on Lenin's Marxist views. The final 90 page chapter "The State and Revolution" may be the most accessible and intelligible of Lenin's views; much of the earlier portions of this 364 page book deal with Lenin's critique of other socialists who have deviated from true Marxism (this is the most difficult part to read, because it assumes a knowledge of his historical context). The book then, is a good one, but introductory exposure to Marxist thought will help. It does provide a valuable, concise biography of Lenin in the introduction.
That aside, let us turn to a critique of Lenin's thought. Lenin was a very intelligent critic of capitalism, with many penetrating insights into the function and abuses of a capitalist economy. It is not that Marxism was based on a complete illusion, but that it was based on a partially-true, compelling illusion that perhaps makes it so seductive, and so dangerous. I dissent, for example, in thinking that only the "dictatorship of the proletariat" can supplant the dictatorship of the bourgeoisie, and that somehow a freer, fuller democracy will result from a worker-managed society in which the state will subsequently "wither away." History demonstrated that instead of withering away, the Communists party only solidified its tyranny over the masses, and substituted one dictatorship for another. That Lenin or Marx possessed a real historical "science" of political-economy I think has been disproved. While claiming not to be a utopian, it is difficult to see how some of Lenin's claims are anything but - in terms of the transformation of human beings by the abolition of class antagonisms. People remain people, inherently biased, often selfish, not concurring, and striving to realize two very difficult things: a society with the greatest possible freedom and equality for all.
Do not be mistaken, however. Just because Lenin (as Marx) made serious errors in their theory, does not excuse the student of ethics, politics, or religion from treating these writings of Lenin with the serious academic study they deserve. Lenin may have been wrong about much, but right about a great deal too. Understanding his thought will be important for any student of history and politics.
That said, this book does very little to comment on religion. Famous for their antipathy towards religion, choose another book if you are interested in their ideas about religion. This book does do very well on Lenin's political-economic theory. Lenin also draws quite considerably on Engels, considering him and Marx to be the only true interpreters (beside himself) of the doctrine.
A final note - the book also does not mention Adam Smith - it is just assumed that capitalist theory is wrong, and Lenin spends much of its time battling the "false" or "opportunist" Marxists (Bernstein, Kautsky, the anarchists). See Marx or perhaps another volume on Lenin for a more direct confrontation of Smith and classical economists.

About the Author
Ulric J. (Joe) Gelinas, Jr., PhD, is Professor Emeritus at Bentley University, Waltham, Massachusetts. For PricewaterhouseCoopers, Dr. Gelinas developed and taught training programs for business processes, internal control, and IT audit. He was Senior Consultant for MIS Training Institute teaching courses in the IT Audit curriculum and taught in the University of Maastricht's International Executive Master of Finance and Control Program. Professor Gelinas also has taught at the University of Tennessee and at Vesalius College, Vrije Universtiteit Brussel, in Brussels, Belgium. Professor Gelinas has published articles on interorganizational collaboration and coordination infrastructures, accounting information systems, use of technology in business education, technical communications, and information privacy. These articles have appeared in academic and practitioner journals, including the Journal of Information Systems, Issues in Accounting Education, IS Audit & Control Journal, Government Information Quarterly, Journal of Information Technology, International Journal of Technology Management, International Journal of IT Standards and Standardization Research, Journal of Information Systems Education, Technical Communications Quarterly, and IEEE Transactions on Professional Communication. In 2003, Professor Gelinas received the Innovation in Auditing and Assurance Education Award from the American Accounting Association. He has made presentations and conducted workshops at the International Conference of the Information Systems Audit and Control Association (ISACA) and at ISACA's Computer Audit, Control, and Security (CACS) conferences as well as for other professional groups. Richard (Rick) Dull, PhD, CPA/CFF, CISA, CFE, is an accounting professor at West Virginia University in Morgantown, West Virginia. Professor Dull also has taught at Clemson University, Indiana University-Indianapolis, and High Point University. His professional experience includes application programming with a manufacturing firm as well as audit and information systems consulting experience with a national CPA firm. His work on a project involving cross-departmental integration of enterprise systems earned him a Microsoft Pinnacle Award for Excellence in Education as well as a Clemson University Board of Trustees Award for Faculty Excellence. Professor Dull has been published in academic and practitioner journals, including Journal of Information Systems, International Journal of Accounting Information Systems, Journal of Emerging Technologies in Accounting, Accounting Education: An International Journal, Issues in Accounting Education, Journal of Accountancy, CPA Journal, and Personal Financial Planning. Professor Dull is a member of the American Accounting Association, American Institute of CPAs, Association of Certified Fraud Examiners, AIS Educator Association, and ISACA. His professional activities have included serving on the AICPA's Assurance Services Executive Committee and serving as President of the American Accounting Association's Artificial Intelligence/Emerging Technologies Section. He recently served as a member of the AICPA's BEC Subcommittee and currently serves as an editor for Journal of Information Systems, an associate editor for Accounting Education: An International Journal, and an editorial advisor for the Journal of Accountancy.

Patrick Wheeler, PhD, CPA, CITP, is Associate Professor at the University of South Florida in Tampa, Florida. He teaches accounting information systems at the graduate and undergraduate levels and has extensive training in databases and enterprise resource planning systems (SAP and Oracle Financials). Professor Wheeler is a CPA with the Louisiana Society of CPAs and a Certified Information Technology Professional (CITP) with the American Institute of CPAs. His research focuses on behavioral issues in information systems, especially in regard to the impact of computerized decision aids on business decision making. His articles, published worldwide in numerous academic journals and magazines, can be found in The Accounting Review, Journal of Information Systems, Behavioral Research in Accounting, Advances in Accounting Behavioral Research, International Journal of Accounting Information Systems, International Journal of Disclosure and Governance, Studies in Managerial and Financial Accounting, Issues in Accounting Education, and Review of Accounting Information Systems. He received the 2007 Outstanding Research Paper Award and the 2007 Finalist Research Paper Award from the Information Systems (IS) section of the American Accounting Association (AAA). He won the Outstanding IS Dissertation Award at the 2001 AAA Annual Meeting and currently serves on the editorial review boards of the Journal of Information Systems and International Journal of Accounting Information Systems. He received the 2006 Outstanding Service Award from the AAA IS Section. Professor Wheeler is active in the AAA at both the national and regional levels.

Reads like an instruction manual

The book reads like an instruction manual to database systems. The examples are terrible and there are numerous logical mistakes within the text—even the answer keys that the professor has is full of errors.

The Idea Factory - An "an assembly line for budding entrepreneurs."

This Idea Factory impressed me from the beginning to the end. The cover drew me in, but the words kept me hooked. This book is well-structured, well-written, and well-researched so that readers can get more than enough information to help them generate ideas for successful businesses.

Did you know that according to a study, 98% of 5 year old children demonstrate a genius level of creativity? Furthermore, only 2% of adults demonstrate this same ability! What happens to our creative minds as we grow older? What can we do to fix this?

The Idea Factory shows us time tested ways to find and enhance our creative side when it comes to generating business ideas. The easy-to-use processes and techniques that the author teaches us will open our minds, stimulate our thoughts, and ultimately give us the energy that we need to create successful business ideas.

The "Walt Disney strategy," the "$100 an hour" strategy, and the "Glass of water technique," are all some of my favorites that I will definitely put into practice.

This book is definitely a must read of all entrepreneurs, new or seasoned, young or old.

Whether you want to start a small business and grow it big or just stay small this book will change your way of thinking and make it so much easier to accomplish your goals. You will want to have a copy of this laying around at all times for reference, pass it on to friends and inspire them too!!

About the Author

Colonel Nick Lipscombe was born in Angers, France. He has a degree in business studies and an MSc in defence studies. He was commissioned into the Royal Artillery in 1980. During his thirty years in the British Army he has seen considerable operational service with the British and American armies, as well as with NATO and the UN.He was awarded the US Bronze Star in 2006.

A keen interest in military history followed his academic studies at the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst concentrating on the Napoleonic era and the Peninsular War in particular. He is Chairman of Peninsular War 200, the UK official organisation for the commemoration of the bicentenary of the Peninsular War. He speaks German and Spanish, currently works in Portugal and lives in Spain with his wife Janny and their three daughters. The author lives in Alicante, Spain.

Handsomely produced volume

This is a handsomely produced volume issued by Osprey to mark the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo. The hardcover is slip-cased, printed on high-quality paper, lavishly illustrated, and complete with a page-marker ribbon. Color is used throughout for illustrations.

Rather then being a straight chronological account, the book is basically a collection of 10 essays presented as chapters and covering the campaign (Ligny and Quatre Bras), the battle itself (e.g. "The Cavalry Charges"), and related topics. Each chapter has a different author, and several of the top current authorities are represented (Haythornthwaite, Adkin, Esdaile). A good Order of Battle table, and a useful bibliography are also included. Overall, a very nice presentation with good content.

So why not 5 stars? While Osprey is justly famous for its commissioned art work depicting the look of soldiers, their equipment, and scenes of battle, there is almost none of that here; most of the art (and there is a lot of it) is drawn from historical sources. Thus while the illustrations are very pleasing to the eye, and provide a good visual narrative, they are less useful as strictly a visual reference. Moreover, a few of the illustrations seem to have received less-then-perfect reproduction and are a bit fuzzy or soft-edged. Sadly, examples of this include the famous Lady Butler paintings "Scotland Forever", and the stand of the 28th at Quatre Bras. Lastly, make no mistake: this is a British publication and takes an unabashedly pro-British view. Rather than an unbiased account of the battle, this is a celebration of a British victory (the Prussians do get fair mention too), viewing Wellington as every bit the equal of Napoleon.

Overall, though, anyone interested in Napoleonic military history, the Waterloo campaign, or Napoleon or Wellington will be well-served by this volume, and happy to have it.

I still haven't made it all the way through this beautiful, information-filled book, but only two chapters left and it's intriguing all the way. A varied group of authors give their individual takes and unique perspectives on specific topics on the battle, with many illustrations from the period to assist in comprehension. This is an elegant book with a protective sleeve and ribbon bookmark, printed on heavy glossy paper that does justice to the illstrations. Well worth the price.

Not the best on Waterloo...

This volume is a great disappointment. I have great respect for Nick Lipscombe as a writer and historian. His Peninsular War Atlas is exceptional, and a classic, and is a must for any serious student of the period. And his Wellington's Guns is another must-have. Lipscombe is a thorough researcher and his writing style is easy to read, interesting, and informative. It is a great shame that he wasn't the author of this volume instead of merely the editor.

I bought the book because I saw Nick Lipscombe's name on the book and didn't notice that he was the editor. And unfortunately, this book has not broken any new ground nor is it a good history of the battle. The Introduction to the book raises the old specter of comparing Napoleon to Hitler, which is not only grossly inaccurate, it has been shown by excellent historians such as JC Herold and Vincent Cronin to be an illogical and inaccurate analogy.

As the previous reviewer accurately stated this is a collection of ten essays on the battle and it misses out on some of the more interesting facets of the battle such as the French infantry and close-support artillery attacks that were gathering momentum after the failure of the French cavalry attacks and posing a serious threat to Wellington's center. The artillery section is poor, and the lack of solid artillery references in the bibliography clearly indicate that little care was taken with this section.

Overall, while a visually impressive publication, the overall value of the book is diminished greatly by what is not included and because of that lack, the book is near-useless as a substantive reference on the battle. It is not recommended, unfortunately

He is co-author of several successful books, including DIGITAL COMMUNICATIONS, 5E (2008), INTRODUCTION TO DIGITAL SIGNAL PROCESSING, 4E (2007); DIGITAL SIGNAL PROCESSING LABORATORY (1991); ADVANCED DIGITAL SIGNAL PROCESSING (1992); DIGITAL PROCESSING OF SPEECH SIGNALS (2000); COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS ENGINEERING, 2E (2002); DIGITAL SIGNAL PROCESSING USING MATLAB V.4, 3E (2010); CONTEMPORARY COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS USING MATLAB, 2E (2004); ALGORITHMS FOR STATISTICAL SIGNAL PROCESSING (2002); FUNDAMENTALS OF COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS (2005).

Dr. Salehi is the coauthor of the textbooks "Communication Systems Engineering," "Communication Systems with MATLAB," "Fundamentals of Communication Systems," and "Digital Communications." His main areas of research interest include information theory and coding.

Complete and rigorous

I'm taking a graduate course of digital communications and using Proakis' book along with Sklar's one. The 2nd one is a very illustrative, book very interesting to read and easy to follow, but when you wanna go further you must go to Proakis' book. This is a more deep reference, who takes more emphasys on mathematical and stochastic models to explain why thing happens in digital communications. In this sense, this book is rigorous, and along with Sklar's book form a very interesting/complemented reference.

If you want to learn Digital Communication, leave this book now

With 5th Edition, this book is over 1000 pages. Digital Communication is not like programming book (which is full of coding list). It is full of reasoning and math. I can't imagine any person can go through this 1000-page journey. Would it be a good reference/dictionary? Certain it is not except for its size. Two major reasons I have:

1. you can't find a consistent notation through this book. Almost each chapter has its own symbol system. I believe it is the most basic requirement for a dictionary or reference.

2. In terms of the results, I believe you can find in other book with better writing qualities and more comprehensive treatment. E.g. You can find all results for PER calculation in "Digital Communication over fading channel "; You can find more fundamental treatment in "Fundamental Wireless Communications"; For coding, we have tens of good book out there. One may think I just replace one book with three. But even with three books, you may pay the same price. Plus better quality is the key to learn especially for beginner. If you just want to know the general ideal, I would like to recommend "Digital Communications" by John Barry et.al.

In short, if you want to learn about digital communication, leave this book along. This book has been over-appraised for many years. Not sure how many students are intimidated by this book so that stop pursuing this area. Believe me, digital communication is interesting and you don't have to go through this book to appreciate it.

Like a trip to the dentist.. without the novacain

I'm as over-educated as it gets, so I've seen my share of bad textbooks. But this one takes the prize. It is a painfully difficult book to read. It's not an engineering book. It's a math book. The overwhelming emphasis throughout is on mathematical conciseness. There isn't a shred of intuitive insight offered anywhere. The formalism and obtuse methods cloud even the simplest concepts. Examples are few and far between. If your goal is to design comm systems this book will be of no value. If your goal is to become an academic writing obscure papers about comm theory then this is your bible.

About the Author
Joanne Avison is co-founder and director of the Art of Contemporary Yoga Teacher Training School, (AOCY) accredited worldwide by Yoga Alliance (USA), Yoga Federation of India, European Yoga Alliance and IPTI. She holds E-RYT500 status, ("E" denotes Experience) with many thousands of registered teaching hours over the last two decades, accumulated all over the world since she started yoga teacher training in 1995. Joanne is also a Professional Structural Integrator (IASI) and as an early graduate of Tom Myer's KMI school (1999-2001), became a Certified Teacher of Kinesis, before designing the yoga teacher training programme. Her considerable experience in both movement and manual therapy inspired the school's unique approach to yoga and anatomy. Joanne is also a CMED Graduate (2004) and has studied extensively in human development as well as specialising in soft tissue and the links between archetypal behaviour and physiology. Her intensive studies include Human Dissection and movement research in Fascial Fitness with Robert Schleip. She is a certified Craniosacral Practitioner and her early background in art & design always informs her lively approach to teaching and learning. Her workshops and webinars are extremely informative, down-to-earth and practical. She devotes a lot of her time to the Diploma Course in The Art of Contemporary Yoga &the Science of Body Architecture. The 1 - 2 year certification is renowned in the UK and Europe for the highest qualification of Intermediate and Advanced Yoga Teachers. The course includes Applied Anatomy, Ancient Far Eastern Psychology, Restorative and Dynamic Yoga. Joanne currently teaches regular workshops and Webinars around the world on Structural Anatomy and Fascial Fitness.

This is an excellent book on Fascia and Yoga --I'm a 200

This is an excellent book on Fascia and Yoga --I'm a 200, 300, and 500-hour level teacher trainer and am using this in my current 300-hour level training. She is extremely knowledgeable about both yoga and the fascia, and presents her information in a clear and interesting way. She brings up many relevant points indicating a solid understanding of both yoga and the fascia. I've been studying yoga for over 30 years, am a certified bodyworker with years of experience working with fascia, and she has done an excellent job presenting this body of work.

There are some other books out there on yoga and the fascia (--for example --Myofascial Yoga by Kristie Bender Segarra, which is a complete waste of money and embarrassingly incomplete and patently incorrect in many ways. Save yourself some serious aggravation and don't bother with that one!) --THIS book; however, is top-notch.

It is worth every dime and minute of your time! It is well-written and a superlative piece of work.

Brilliant book, a bible for Fascia and Movement Therapists

Exceptional book. A must read for anyone in the movement therapy field or anyone owning a body who wishes to understand how we move relative to our fascial architecture. The detail, drawings, and sources of information make this book a densely packed manual for human movement. Ms Avison speaks from science, and yet is able to tell a story so one can apply the information. Generous and wise in the telling.

A must read

Although not mentioned in the title, this book provides a passport for travel from the country of biomechanics to the other world of the syntactical BioTensegrity. The book is written specifically about Yoga, fascia and MOVEMENT and therein lies the connection with BioTensegrity, the model that binds. The book itself reflects the very nature of BioTensegrity and fascial connectiveness. Intelligence is ubiquitous throughout and continuity ensures an easy read from beginning to end.
Supporting photographs (e.g. p.195 Figure 11.2) are rendering images that provide the reader with a stepping stone to other possible dimensions, movement explanations and new understandings of movement potential. As a Clinical Anatomist I found chapter 5 to be a tour de force on the genesis, development and growth of us. Professor Darrell Evans rightly deserves Joanne’s thanks as their collaboration has proved to be a great success in “The Remarkable Human Blueprint”. YOGA FASCIA ANATOMY and MOVEMENT by Joanne Sarah Avison (Handspring Publishing) is a must read for anyone interested in YOGA specifically and Human Movement generally. Not only does it get my thumbs up approval it is a 5 star read.
